Christchurch School is a co-ed Episcopal boarding and day school serving grades 9—12. Founded in 1921, Christchurch is located on a 125-acre waterfront campus on the Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia’s tidewater region. The school’s Mission is to inspire and guide each student's pursuit of personal excellence in academics and character so they are prepared for meaningful lives as engaged citizens and community leaders.

Responsibilities

Position Overview. Christchurch School seeks a full-time Director of Mental Health and Performance. This position oversees all aspects of mental health at Christchurch School and works collaboratively with other professionals related to student wellness. Those responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • build on our culture of performance based coaching;
  • continue to de-stigmatize mental health among a teenage population;
  • develop rapport with high school aged students easily;
  • understand the student population of Christchurch School and support the admission team in assessing and attracting prospective students
  • collaborate on developing programming with other wellness professionals at the school and our community life team;
  • complete clinical assessments and provide short term individual counseling as needed;
  • work with community life team when leaves of absences related to mental wellness may be appropriate;
  • partner with athletic and performing arts programs to enhance mental wellness and performance through mental performance workshops focusing on areas of goal setting, visualization, concentration, relaxation, and more
  • coordinate counseling services with referral counselors;
  • maintain strict professionalism and confidentiality;
  • is available to respond to students' emotional and mental health crises, provide crisis intervention, during the school day and when on call;
  • serves as counselor-on-call.

Christchurch School fosters a student-centered approach, embraces the boarding school model for meaningful education of the whole child. Employees at CCS are expected to foster an inclusive workplace and contribute to a community built on equitable policies and procedures. This position will also contribute to aspects of the school by some combination of leading an advisory of 7-10 students, being a part of a duty team one evening per week and 6-7 weekends per year, and preferably participating in one or two seasons of co-curriculars (particular areas of need are boy’s and girl’s soccer, girl’s volleyball, sailing, boy’s lacrosse, and football). We do want to make sure we balance of the full scope of working at a boarding school with the demands of this particular position.

Required

  • Master's degree in a mental health discipline (e.g. psychology, counseling, or social work).
  • Clear and effective oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in organizing work, maintaining records, managing time, attention to detail, follow through, and setting priorities
  • Maintaining confidentiality with students, parents, employees with sensitivity and understanding
  • Maintains proper professional boundaries
  • Candidates should be realistic and excited about teaching in a boarding school and in working with students with a wide range of academic abilities
  • Ability to carry out and obtain clear and proper professional boundaries

Preferred

  • Experience and training in sports psychology
  • Licensure as a clinician (LPC, LMHC, CSW, or equivalent)
  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) or posses the necessary schooling to pursue CMPC certification
  • Experience working with a wide variety of teenagers, preferably in a school setting

Work Environment And Physical Demands

  • Ability to be mobile around campus and buildings
  • Ability to work at a desk and computer screen for extended periods
  • Some travel required (mainly for athletic competitions)
