Chief Objective of Position
The Torggler Fine Arts Center Fellow will support the Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center at Christopher Newport University (CNU) by providing critical support for the Torggler’s education and curatorial programs, and serving as a liaison to the CNU community and the general public.

The Fellow will serve as a public ambassador for the Torggler Center. The Fellow will be responsible for providing tours of the Center to visitors, including prospective students and their parents. The Fellow will liaise with the Department of Fine Arts and Art History to ensure that prospective students who wish to do so may tour the academic facilities and meet faculty members. The Fellow will also be responsible for providing scheduled tours of the exhibitions for community groups, and for outreach to various community groups and institutions to encourage visitation of the Torggler. Under the guidance of the Education Manager, the Fellow will also help develop a docent program at the Torggler Center, preparing training materials and assisting in the recruitment and training of volunteer docents.

The Fellow will provide support for special programs and events the Torggler may hold, including family days, exhibition opening and closing receptions, student-centered events, donor events, and the like.

The Torggler Fellow will also have a special mandate to reach out to community groups to make them aware of the Torggler’s programs, and potentially develop mutually-beneficial partnerships. Such organizations may include local civic clubs, retirement homes and communities, social service agencies, preschool and daycare organizations, senior citizens and lifelong learning groups, veterans, at-risk youth, and similar.

This position will also assist the Education Manager by serving as an assistant for the summer camp program. The Fellow will assist as needed with camp preparation and scheduling, and with managing the needs of campers as well as those of the Torggler’s instructors. The Fellow will also play a role in the development of the interactive Art Explorers Gallery at the Torggler, slated to open next spring.

The Fellow will have the opportunity to offer creative and innovative solutions to help improve educational programs and the visitor experience at the Torggler.

The Fellow will also assist as needed with major curatorial functions, which could include performing research for an upcoming exhibition, assisting in the execution of agreements and logistics, assisting with select art installations, and helping to market the Torggler’s exhibitions through approved social media channels and other platforms, as directed. This position will assist with other curatorial tasks as necessary.

The Torggler Fine Arts Center Fellow position is generally a one-year appointment, with an anticipated start date of June 1, 2022.

Work Tasks
  • Carry out tasks to support educational initiatives as assigned by the Education Manager or the Executive Director.
  • Develop and maintain exemplary relationships with visitors to the Center, including prospective students, and maintain positive public relations with faculty, staff, students, alumni and community.
  • Develop relationships with external community organizations for the purpose of encouraging visitation to the Torggler and developing outreach programs to expand the Center’s footprint.
  • Foster a collaborative relationship with the Department of Fine Art and Art History as well as other departments and programs on campus, such as the Community Captains program.
  • Develop and provide tours for visitors to the Center, and assist in the development of a docent program to train volunteers to provide tours.
  • Assist and provide support for curatorial endeavors–including research, logistics, and installation– as requested.
  • Promote the mission of the Torggler and support additional programs that enhance the overall experience, such as Family Fun Days and other special events.
  • This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.
  • Develop and maintain very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and treat everyone with dignity and respect. Fully support the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.
  • Review and communicate safety issues to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absence.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) required
The successful candidate must possess in-depth knowledge of the Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center at CNU; excellent interpersonal communication, organizational and time management skills; must be highly motivated, innovative and creative and have strong computer skills; must multitask effectively, using limited time to accomplish a significant number of assignments; must have the ability to foster positive internal and external public relations and work both independently and on a team; must have the ability to consult with faculty, administrators, students and families; must be able to communicate the value of the visual arts to a strong liberal arts education at CNU; and possess energy and enthusiasm about the CNU culture and experience. This job entails lifting and moving objects.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) preferred
Preference will be given to candidates with excellent ability in public speaking, professional writing, and demonstrated community service.

Required Education
December 2021 or May 2022 graduate of Christopher Newport University.

Experience Required
The successful candidate will have significant and active engagement in the co-curricular and academic life of CNU, to include involvement with faculty, administrators, and other students in addition to demonstrated experience providing leadership to peers and communityservice engagement.

Experience Preferred
Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience and involvement with service-oriented activities, and prior experience in a museum or gallery setting. Prior experience in customer service and/or public speaking is a plus.
