Job Description
The Church of St. Joseph is seeking a full-time Director of Sacred Music who will, in keeping with the Church’s guiding principles, promote the full, conscious, and active participation of the faithful in liturgical celebrations. The Director of Sacred Music will cooperatively implement this vision with the Pastor and his staff as the Church of St. Joseph strives in its liturgical life to express in our lives and to manifest to others the mystery of Christ and the real nature of the true Church.
Primary responsibilities of this position will include:
(1) coordination of sacred music for liturgies (weekend Masses, Holy Days, other special parish liturgies and assist with funerals/weddings as needed),
(2) directing and overseeing choral programs, and
(3) the training, scheduling and supervising of all musicians.
The ideal candidate will be proficient in cantoring, accompanying and conducting. Interest and experience in sacred music as defined by Musicam Sacram, both English and Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony in its various forms, sacred music for the organ and piano, and sacred popular music preferred.
Job Qualifications: (1) Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in music and/or vocal training required, Master's degree or graduate studies preferred. (2) Practicing Roman Catholic, but not required. (3) Demonstrated respect for Catholic doctrine and religious practices, with public conduct that is consistent with the faith, morals, teachings, and laws of the Catholic Church. (4) Proficient knowledge and understanding of liturgical practices and teachings, in particular, Musicam Sacram, Instruction on Music in the Liturgy. (5) Previous parish experience preferred, but not required. (6) Experience in effectively building and directing choirs; proficiency as an accompanist. (7) Demonstrated ability to recruit and mentor instrumentalists, choir members and cantors – both professional and volunteer. (8) Ability to communicate effectively with parishioners, leadership, and the broader community. (9) Ability to work positively as a member of the Church of St. Joseph staff, and actively promote the mission of the parish and school. (10) Basic experience with sound systems and equipment beneficial. (11) Computer skills that include the use of Microsoft products, email, and other software. (12) Successfully complete the Essential 3 requirements – Virtus training, background check, and Code of Conduct
