Churchill County is accepting applications for the position of Lifeguard/Swim Instructor. We are looking for self-motivated, reliable people to provide a safe swimming environment. You need to be a strong swimmer who enjoys being at the pool, have good customer service skills, be highly observant, and be professional. The most appropriately qualified applicants will be invited for an interview and skills test.

Note: The county is, ideally, looking for applicants who are currently lifeguard-certified. If you are not certified, apply anyway. We may be willing to provide training to otherwise-qualified applicants.

Position Summary: Under general supervision, performs customer service, aquatic class instruction, safety work as a pool lifeguard, and performs other work as assigned. 
This job description indicates, in general, the nature and levels of work, knowledge, skills, abilities and other essential functions (as covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act) expected of the incumbent.  It is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required of the incumbent.  Incumbent may be asked to perform other duties as required.

The duties listed below are the examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class.  An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below. 
  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Insures the safety of swimming pool customers by performing basic lifeguard services and enforcing pool rules and regulations in an assertive manner.
  • Performs routine maintenance and custodial functions, including taking water chemistry tests and informing supervisor of any faulty equipment or problems.  Clean biohazard contaminated areas.
  • Deals effectively with the public on a regular basis.
  • Performs duties of cashier and/or swim instructor on an as-needed basis; including record keeping, filing, and handling confidential patron information.
  • Attends meetings and training sessions as required.  Demonstrate proficiency in American Red Cross lifeguard skills at routine staff meetings.
Knowledge and Ability
Knowledge of: lifesaving techniques; basic swimming pool maintenance.
 
Skill in: CPR, First Aid, swimming and lifesaving; dealing with customers in a courteous and helpful manner.
 
Ability to: effectively enforce safety and health regulations relating to an aquatic facility; understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instruction; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors, and the general public.
 
Special Requirements
Shift work, split shifts, rotating work schedule, weekdays, weekend and overtime work may be required. Mandatory, ongoing training is required.
 
Experience and Training
Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.  A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:
 
Be trained in the following areas and hold a current American Red Cross certification in Lifeguard Training/First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer; ability to provide quality swim instruction and obtain the Water Safety Instructor certification within 1 year.
Frequent swimming, walking, talking and hearing.  Frequent running carefully in wet areas.  Frequent raising of voice loudly, audibly and understandably.  Occasional use of hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.  Occasional climbing or balancing.  Occasional lifting and or moving over 100 pounds.  Continuously be able to perform the physical demands required within the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course.
 
Work environment includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals.  Frequent contact with members of the public.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the field.

Conditions of Employment
  1. Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
  2. New employees are required to submit to a background investigation and if hired for a safety-sensitive position, a drug/alcohol screen.  Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug/alcohol screen (if applicable). 
  3. Churchill County participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS, with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.  All candidates who are offered employment must complete Section 1 of the Form I-9 along with the required proof of their right to work in the United States and proof of their identity prior to starting employment.  Please be prepared to provide required documentation as soon as possible after the job offer is made.
