Organization Overview:
Lahontan is a private golf community located in Truckee, California. Camp Lahontan is a five-acre recreation area within Lahontan Golf Club. The facility includes 3 pools, a spa, three tennis courts, volleyball, basketball, 2 pickleball courts, 2 bocce courts, a playground, fire pit and amphitheater. The Camp Pavilion includes men’s and women’s locker rooms, a family restroom, Camp Great Room with fireplace and entertainment center, Snack Shack, and Camp Director’s office. Camp Lahontan is open to members, their families and guests. Within the Camp, the Director and staff will create programming for children, families and adults.
Job Description:
The swim instructor is responsible for teaching swimming skills and water safety to children of various ages and skill levels in a safe, engaging, and enjoyable environment. This role requires a deep understanding of swimming instruction techniques, a passion for working with children, and the ability to foster a positive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Member Experience: Deliver exceptional service to members and guests, guiding and providing excellent hospitality.
- Instruction: Plan and deliver swimming lessons tailored to the individual student’s needs and skill level, ensuring that each child progresses in their swimming abilities.
- Safety Enforcement: Maintain a safe and supervised swimming environment by always enforcing pool rules and safety protocols. Conduct regular safety drills and educate children about water safety practices.
- Skill Assessment: Assess students’ swimming abilities and provide personalized feedback to help them improve. Maintain records of each child’s progress and communicate regularly with parents regarding their development.
- Engagement: Use creative and engaging teaching methods to motivate and inspire children to enjoy swimming and learn essential skills, including strokes, floating, treading water, and breathing techniques.
- Group Management: Effectively manage groups of children during lessons, ensuring that attention is given to everyone’s needs while promoting teamwork and cooperation.
- Communication: Foster open communication with parents and guardians, providing updates on their child’s progress, goals, and any area of development.
- Professional Development: Stay current with best practices in swimming instruction and safety by attending training sessions, workshops, and certifications.
- Self-Awareness: Recognizing and understanding personal emotions and their impact on behavior and decisions. The ability to self-reflect and manage one’s emotions effectively in a high-pressure situation is essential.
- Motivation: Exhibiting intrinsic motivation and a positive attitude that inspires and energizes others. A passion for mentoring and guiding campers and members during their experiences contributes to a thriving community at the camp.
- Feedback & Improvement: Gather participant feedback post-events to assess success; make recommendations for future programming based on insights gathered.
Qualifications:
- Background Check clearance prior to employment.
- Previous experience as a swimming instructor, with a focus on teaching young children (ages 3-12) and a strong understanding of swimming instruction techniques and safety.
- Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Water Safety Instruction are required.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage children and parents, fostering a positive learning environment.
- A patient, enthusiastic approach to teaching that encourages confidence and enjoyment in swimming among young learners.
- You must be physically fit and comfortable in the water, with the ability to demonstrate swimming techniques accurately.
- Previous experience in organizing and facilitating recreational activities, sports events, or similar role preferred.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Availability:
- Candidates must have flexible availability between 20 - 25 hours per week, beginning in Mid- June through Mid-August and include weekends, days and holidays.
