Underwriters evaluate the risk of insuring a potential Cigna customer and use that information to set premium rates for insurance policies. As part of our Underwriting team, you will directly impact our business on a daily basis, protecting Cigna‘s sound financial position which enables us to meet our financial commitments to our customers.
RULDP associates begin to shape their career path through their professional experiences with program support and discussions with direct managers, mentors, RULDP peers, trainers, individual career development program managers. RULDP offers structured technical training (ULTRA – Underwriting Leadership Training & Risk Assessment) and non-technical training (competency based workshops), networking opportunities, formal mentoring, and exposure to a breadth of underwriting roles across multiple product lines. The duration of the program is 4-5 years, offering two 24 month rotations. In addition to rotations you will insight into other roles within the Risk Management & Underwriting organization through formalized job shadows and project work. Throughout the program you will challenged to develop the skills and competencies necessary to become a successful Underwriter.
RULDP is an extensive learning opportunity that guides your experience through the early stages of your Risk Management & Underwriting career. The program include a mixture of instructor-led classroom training, self-study, and on-the-job experiences.

What you’ll do:
The program will begin with approximately six to eight weeks of classroom training and three to six months of on-the-job training and experience. This initial technical training portion of the program is called ULTRA. ULTRA provides thorough education on Cigna products and services, insurance basics and risk dynamics, underwriting and risk selection, results oriented book of business management, negotiation skills, systems and tools, and contract language and terms. The knowledge and skills that the program provides will set you up to be a successful Underwriter at Cigna.
Career Path:
Upon completion of your technical training (ULTRA), you will be part of a team responsible for determining the appropriate premium rate level and plan design structure of individual cases, analyzing total case profitability, and conducting customer negotiations with Sales and Account Management on their book of business. You will also have the opportunity to build successful, productive relationships with matrix partners within Cigna, while receiving continuous career development training and mentoring throughout your program experience.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in the following major and/or minors are preferred: Risk Management, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Management, Mathematics, and Business
- 0-3 Years of work experience
- Preferred GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Ability to negotiate
- High comfort level with math/numbers
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong business acumen with leadership, innovative thinking, and customer centric mindset
