Position Overview
Reporting to the Superintendent, the Marketing and Communications Director is responsible for leading the district’s comprehensive marketing and communication strategies to enhance brand awareness, stakeholder engagement, and community relations. This role ensures that all communications align with the district’s mission, vision, and commitment to serving an urban, diverse student population. The director oversees internal and external communications, media relations, branding, crisis communication, and community engagement while supporting all district departments with strategic marketing initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a strategic marketing and communications plan that promotes the district’s programs, initiatives, and priorities.
- Oversee all branding efforts to ensure a consistent and professional image of the district across all platforms, including the development of strategic marketing and advertising plans using SEO strategies and analytics tools to support enrollment and retention
- Oversee media relations, including drafting press releases, coordinating interviews, and responding to media inquiries.
- Oversee crisis communication planning and response to ensure timely and accurate information dissemination.
- Develop and oversee content for digital platforms, including the district website, social media, email marketing, and video production.
- Support all district departments by creating marketing materials, campaign strategies, and communication plans tailored to their needs.
- Manage community engagement efforts to build strong relationships with families, community partners, and stakeholders.
- Monitor and analyze communication metrics to assess effectiveness and adjust strategies accordingly.
- Oversee internal communication efforts to ensure district employees are informed and engaged.
- Supervise and provide professional development for the communications and marketing team, including graphic designers, content creators, and public relations staff.
- Collaborate with leadership to develop messaging strategies that reflect the district’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and student success.
- Ensure all communication efforts comply with legal and ethical guidelines, including FERPA and public records policies.
Qualifications, Education and Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in marketing, communications, or public relations, preferably in an education or public sector setting.
- Proven experience leading a communications team and managing large-scale marketing campaigns.
- Experience working in or communicating about urban school districts is preferred.
- Strong background in crisis communication and media relations.
- exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency in AP style.
- Strong leadership and project management abilities.
- Expertise in digital marketing, social media management, and branding.
- Ability to develop culturally responsive communication strategies that reflect the district’s diverse communities.
- High level of proficiency in content management systems, email marketing platforms, and design software (Adobe Suite, Canva, etc.).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external stakeholders.
- Experience managing budgets and contracts related to marketing and communication efforts.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekend with responsibilities for district events or crisis response.
