Position Overview
Reporting to the Marketing and Communications Director, the Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing strategic communication plans that enhance the district’s image, engage stakeholders, and support student achievement. This role oversees internal and external communication efforts, including media relations, crisis communication, digital content, and community engagement.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies that align with the district’s mission, objectives, and urban school environment.
- Manage district-wide communication initiatives, including public relations, social media, newsletters, and website content.
- Serve as a spokesperson for the district when needed and maintain strong relationships with media representatives.
- Oversee the development of press releases, talking points, and official statements.
- Manage crisis communication planning and response to ensure timely and transparent messaging.
- Provide strategic communication support to all district departments, ensuring alignment with overall district messaging.
- Support school principals and district leaders with communication guidance and materials tailored to their specific needs.
- Develop and manage content for digital platforms, including social media and the district website, with an emphasis on accessibility and engagement.
- Monitor public perception of the district and proactively address concerns, particularly those affecting urban school communities.
- Plan and execute community engagement initiatives to foster positive relationships with families, staff, and community partners.
- Track and analyze marketing and communication metrics, including SEO strategies and analytics tools, to measure effectiveness and make data-driven improvements.
- Collaborate with departments to ensure consistency in messaging across all platforms.
- Supervise communication staff, interns, or vendors as needed.
Qualifications, Education and Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in public relations, media, or communications, preferably in an education or government setting.
- Experience managing crisis communication and media relations.
- Familiarity with digital communication tools, including website management, email marketing, and social media platforms.
- Experience working in or communicating about urban school districts is preferred.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience developing culturally responsive communication strategies.
- Familiarity with design software (Adobe Suite, Canva) and content management systems is a plus.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong leadership and project management abilities.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with professionalism.
- Proficiency in AP-style writing and editing.
Contract, Salary and Benefits
