Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly experienced and dynamic Controller, VP of Finance to join our leadership team. As a senior financial executive, this position will oversee the company’s financial operations, ensuring the timely and accurate closing of books, financial reporting, and adherence to compliance standards. This role demands a seasoned finance professional with a strong background in the construction industry, including extensive experience with percentage of completion (POC) accounting, and a proven track record in leading financial teams.

The ideal candidate will possess 10-15 years of progressive experience in finance, including roles at a Big 4 accounting firm, and will have a deep understanding of financial processes and controls in a fast-paced, project-driven environment. This is a leadership role requiring expertise in managing teams, mentoring junior staff, and guiding strategic financial decisions across the organization.

Job Duties:

  • Financial Leadership & Strategy:
    Lead and manage the overall financial operations of the company, including accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis. Provide strategic insights to the senior leadership team to drive business performance and profitability.
  • Financial Reporting & Accounting:
    Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial closing processes to ensure accurate and timely reporting. Manage the preparation of financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP, and handle audit processes.
  • Percentage of Completion (POC) Accounting:
    Lead and manage the accounting for construction projects using the percentage of completion (POC) method, ensuring accurate revenue and expense recognition throughout the life of projects.
  • Staff Management & Development:
    Build and manage a high-performing finance team, ensuring proper staff structure and alignment with company goals. Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to team members, encouraging growth within the organization.
  • Internal Controls & Compliance:
    Ensure the establishment and maintenance of robust internal controls and financial systems to prevent fraud, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain financial integrity.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting:
    Oversee the annual budgeting process and provide accurate financial forecasts based on project pipelines and operational needs. Collaborate with other departments to track performance against budget and make data-driven adjustments.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
    Partner with key stakeholders across the business, including operations, project management, and senior leadership, to provide financial insights and drive data-informed decisions. Present financial performance updates to the executive team and the Board of Directors as needed.
  • Process Improvement:
    Lead initiatives to streamline financial processes, improve reporting accuracy, and enhance the efficiency of the accounting and finance departments.
  • Risk Management:
    Identify and manage financial risks related to construction projects, contracts, and financial operations. Develop and implement strategies to mitigate potential risks.
Requirements:
  • Education & Certifications:
    Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA or equivalent certification required. Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, Master’s in Accounting) preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, with a strong background in construction or project-based industries.
    • At least 5 years of experience managing and mentoring teams, with demonstrated success in developing staff and leading financial operations.
    • Significant experience with percentage of completion (POC) accounting and managing the financial aspects of large-scale construction projects.
    • Experience working at one of the Big 4 accounting firms, with exposure to complex accounting and financial management challenges.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Deep understanding of GAAP, construction industry-specific accounting regulations, and financial reporting.
    • Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., Procore, Viewpoint, Sage, or similar).
    • Advanced Excel skills for financial modeling, reporting, and analysis.
  • Leadership Skills:
    • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with senior executives, staff, and external stakeholders.
    • Proven experience in building, managing, and developing high-performance teams.
    • Ability to provide strategic financial insights and recommendations in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle complex financial scenarios.
    • Detail-oriented, with a focus on accuracy and quality in all financial reporting.
    • Effective communicator with a collaborative approach to decision-making.

Physical Requirements:

  • May be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, keyboard, and telephone, along with other general office equipment.
  • Close vision abilities required due to computer work.
  • Light to moderate lifting/carrying of 25 lbs may be required.
  • Reaching overhead or below.
  • Work environment may include being able to tolerate moderate noise (i.e., business office with computers, phones, printers, light traffic)
  • Ability to work in a confined area.
  • Ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period.
