Job Summary
The Laundry Worker II is responsible for the general cleaning, drying, and distribution of various linens and clothing for the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (JTDC) facility.
Typical Duties
- Collects soiled laundry (linens and clothing) from the Admissions, Residential, and Medical units on a daily basis
- Signs log book on each residential unit when collecting and returning laundry
- Sorts unwashed articles by color and fabric and tracks all items collected; reports any shortages or discrepancies in counts to the Director of Environmental Services or designee
- Loads and unloads automatic washing and drying machines
- Washes, folds, and places clean articles on racks by units.
- Returns accurate amount of laundered linen and clothing to each unit
- Maintains accurate record of all in-coming and out-going clothing items
- Files laundry sheets and request records for future reference
- Routinely handles chemicals commonly used in laundry and performs custodial duties in the laundry area
- Clean washers and dryers daily
- Reports any problems with laundry machines to supervisor
- Disinfects articles of clothing as needed in the Admissions/Intake Units.
- Disinfects crocs using approved disinfectant spray; sorts by size; stores in bins for reuse by residential unit staff
- Removes worn clothing or linen from circulation and stores in bin for use by the Training Unit
- Follows inventory tracking procedures
- Follows JTDC Policies and Procedures
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 1 year previous experience in a laundry or custodial capacity and knowledge of cleaning methods; institutional, correctional, or governmental experience strongly preferred
- United States citizenship
- 21 years of age at the time of application submission
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Other Characteristics
- Highly accountable, reliable, prompt, with a strong work ethic and the ability to function independently in the laundry area
- Flexible and effective under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to: lift, push, pull, and otherwise move objects weighing up to 50 pounds; stand and/or walk for long periods of time; and exercise safety and care to avoid injuries or breakage
- Ability to work with cleaning compounds, solvents, and chemicals
- Ability to effectively understand, communicate, and follow instructions in English (verbally and written)
- Demonstrates basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred
- Bilingual communication skills preferred

- Extensive reaching, bending, lifting and moving of heavy objects or materials; climbing
- Extended periods of walking throughout the facility
- Extended periods of standing
- Ability to effectively communicate (hear and respond) 10 codes through the intercom/radio transmission monitoring system.
- Hearing ability to use and understand the monitoring system
- Must be able to work overtime based on departmental needs
- Interaction with the public, employees and residents
- Exposure to resident behavior problems that may include physical acting out and require safe physical management skills
- Exposure to various chemicals and cleaning solvents
- Exposure to facility physical deficiencies and pests
- Exposure to various electrically powered driven machines and hand-held tools
- Exposure to youth with various states of cleanliness and hygiene
- Exposure to various health related conditions or residents of a communicable nature which requires. Precaution and adhering to medical instruction.
- Exposure to communicable diseases of youth
- Illinois residency obtained within 90 days of date of hire
- Pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check including but not limited to LEADS, CANTS, and professional references
- A result of negative from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Child Abuse Registry
- Open daily availability for days, evenings, weekends, and holidays (shifts subject to change)
