What are the responsibilities and job description for the Restorative Justice Program Coordinator position at Citizens for Safe Schools?

Citizens for Safe Schools (CFSS) is a non-profit youth development agency with a vision for a safe and drug-free community where children at risk for delinquency, academic failure, and victimization have opportunities to build resiliency and character. CFSS provides the community with a one-to-one, professionally supported volunteer-based mentoring program that targets youth in the 4th-8th grades.
CFSS works in collaboration with schools, the juvenile department, and related partners to implement preventative and character education programming to achieve improved graduation rates, and reduced delinquency and juvenile crime in Klamath County.
Location:
This position will involve frequent travel between the Citizens for Safe Schools downtown office and local schools and organizations. Applicants will need to maintain a safe driving record, appropriate licensure, and a method of regular transportation.
Position Summary:
Citizens for Safe Schools (CFSS) is in the process of developing Klamath County's first-ever youth-centered Restorative Justice (RJ) program. Restorative justice programs for youth are designed to help young people take genuine responsibility for their actions and repair the harm they cause, while also diverting them from the juvenile justice system. As an intervention following wrongdoing, restorative justice works with both the people who have caused harm and the victim(s) and community members impacted. This position will help participants identify harms, needs, and obligations, then make a plan to repair the harm and put things as right as possible.
RJ programs aim to build a sense of community when responding to conflict and harm. Additionally, Citizens for Safe Schools will be working with a pilot school site to launch an in-school Youth Peer mediation process. This will be a specialized diversion program for young offenders, typically involving first-time, non-violent offenses. In this peer mediation process, the young person attends a youth panel, where their case is heard by a panel of their peers. This offers an alternative to traditional juvenile court or school suspension/expulsion processing.
