Solid Waste Technician I

The Solid Waste Technician I provides customer service at the Citrus County Landfill, issue tickets and receipts, categorize waste types and inspect loads of waste. The schedule for this full-time position will be five 8-hour days. Days worked range from Monday through Saturday. Hours worked range between 6:45 AM – 5:00 PM.

  • Drives and/or operates a county vehicle or equipment and must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
  • Provides excellent customer service in all interactions.
  • Issues tickets and receipts to customers, handles cash and performs daily counts.
  • Recognizes and categorizes waste types including solid, hazardous and class II waste.  Applies appropriate fees to waste categories.
  • Inspects loads of waste, guides and instructs customers in the Citizen Service area to ensure proper disposal of waste per regulation, and performs general clean up.
  • Uses various standard maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, hand tools, pick up trucks, and ATV's.
  • Assists in permit compliance to avoid fines from the Florida Department of Environment Protection (FDEP).
  • Performs other duties as required.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Prior cash handling and cashiering experience, preferred.
 
Certificates, Licenses, Registration, Skills
  • Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
  • Ability to work rotating schedule (may include weekends and holidays).
  • Ability to effectively use standard maintenance equipment and hand tools.
  • Requires ability to work outdoors under unpleasant conditions.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength, agility, and stamina to perform assigned tasks under adverse conditions.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within one (1) year of employment Landfill Spotter certification (In-House training will be provided).
  • Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.
  • Must have strong working knowledge of computers and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite of Products (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Prior working experience using a scale house system such as Auto Scale, preferred.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
    • IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS); and
    • IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
 
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Requires standing and walking most of the day.
  • The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 reaching above shoulders.
  • The job requires frequent bending, balancing, and twisting, and occasional throwing and squatting.
  • The job requires the completion of tasks that involve simple grasping, fine manual manipulation, typing, and occasional pushing pulling, operating foot controls/levers, and driving automotive equipment.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
  • The job may risk exposure to adverse weather, moving machinery, fumes and gases, and extreme noise.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities
  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
