Wastewater Management oversees all aspects of wastewater functions, including the construction, operation, and maintenance of the City’s sanitary and storm systems. The agency implements city wastewater policies, establishes cost controls and fees used to support operational requirements and capital improvements projects, and responds to customer inquiries.
What We Offer
The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $25.00-$28.00. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location
In this position you can expect to work on site at various locations, 5 days per week. The hours for this position are typically Monday-Friday 6:30am-3:00pm.
What You’ll Do
The Wastewater Management division has an opening for an Construction Equipment Operator I
Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Operates small, medium and large, complex specialized industrial equipment while controlling both the speed and direction of the vehicle and operations of the working attachments and adjusts level and angle of attachments in accordance with the nature of the work while regularly performing skilled work in construction, earthmoving, and/or other work-related duties.
  • Identifies equipment needs for each assigned project and ensures the safe and efficient operation of equipment and a variety of work-related tools.
  • Inspects vehicle for loose parts, damaged or worn tires, proper air pressure in tires, and other items affecting its safe operation and completes a pre/post trip inspection as defined by federal guidelines.
  • Observes on-board instruments while operating equipment and takes routine corrective action if malfunctions are indicated.
  • Performs manual labor in construction, maintenance, and/or other work-related duties when not driving equipment to or operating it at the work site.
  • Assists in preventative maintenance of equipment by washing and servicing vehicles with water, oil, and fuel, performs basic maintenance, and makes minor running repairs.
  • Keeps trip records and logs, reports defects in the vehicle’s operations, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to the vehicle.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner and provides information within the area of assignment.
  • Participates in snow removal duties.
  • Provides training to less experienced employees.
  • May be required to be on-call to address emergent needs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Employees may be re-deployed to work in other capacities in their own agencies or in other City agencies to support core functions of the City during a City-wide emergency declared by the Mayor.
  • Any one position may not include all the duties listed. However, the allocation of positions will be determined by the amount of time spent in performing the essential duties listed above.
  • Please note this is not a truck driving position, you will be operating heavy machinery such as excavators, loaders, skid steers, backhoes, and power shovels.

  • Experience operating machinery such as excavators, loaders, skid steers, backhoes, power shovels, and other earthmoving equipment.
  • A construction background operating equipment and hand tools
  • Leadership skills
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate
  • Experience Requirement: One (1) year of experience operating equipment at the
  • Equipment Operator level or higher (approximately 700 hours per year)
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements
  • License/Certifications: This job requires driving. A valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s
  • License (CDL “B”) with appropriate endorsements is required as a condition of employment
  • Requires Air Brake (L) endorsement
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
