What We Offer
The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $105,000 / year. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to :

Location & Schedule
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position you can expect to work three (3) days in office. For your in-office days, you can expect to work on-site at the Webb Municipal Building (201 W. Colfax Ave., Denver, CO 80202). A 9 / 80 flex option could become available after probation.

The Senior City Planner – Downtown Area Plan position will be a part of our Planning Services Division’s Planning and Implementation Team and will serve as the city’s project manager for the ongoing Downtown Area Plan. Future work tasks may include planning and implementation of transit-oriented development sites as part of a CPD team focused on delivering special projects. The ideal candidate will offer experience in project management, site development and implementation planning in highly urban, mixed-use spaces with a strong commitment to advancing equity and advancing the City’s adopted plans, including Comprehensive Plan 2040 and Blueprint Denver.
Small area plans are typically interdisciplinary planning initiatives that address diverse topics including multi-modal transportation, land use, infrastructure, urban design, equity, housing, economic development, sustainability, and quality of life. Project management activities include management of scope, quality, schedule, costs, personnel, consultants, contract documents and communications; and oversees consultants and assures contract compliance.
Specifically, as the Senior City Planner, you will :
Serve as project manager of a diverse and interdisciplinary team that prepares the Downtown Area Plan and future special projects in CPD.
Develop goals and objectives, policies, recommendations, and implementation strategies that bring together land use, multi-modal transportation, infrastructure, equity, urban design, economic development, sustainability, and quality of life.
Coordinate complex planning projects which include multi-agency / multi-jurisdictional efforts and typically include overseeing the work of consultants and staff. This entails developing scopes of work, timelines, and budgets, and keeping a diverse set of stakeholders constructively engaged.
Proactively engage the public in planning activities including facilitating meetings, making effective presentations, and bringing together stakeholders to discuss proposed planning initiatives, assess obstacles, evaluate opposing views and interests, and determine areas of support.
Implement plans in a variety of ways including translating planning policies into form-based zoning regulations and design guidelines, advancing infrastructure design projects, and fostering partnerships with other implementing agencies and organizations.
What You’ll Bring
Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics :
Seven or more years of professional experience in community planning and development, ideally with direct experience managing complex long-range planning projects.
Experience with long-range planning tools including area and citywide plans, development regulations and zoning codes.
Strong understanding of land use and development patterns, multi-modal transportation and infrastructure, economic development, and the inter-relationship among them.
Experience leading interdisciplinary teams and engaging with a wide range of staff and departments.
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills
Commitment to integrating equity into planning / regulatory work.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite; Familiarity with GIS and data analysis (demographics, market / economic trends).
Required Minimum Qualifications
Education requirement : Bachelor’s Degree in City or Regional Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, Engineering, or a related degree.
Experience Requirement : Five (5) years of professional planning experience.
Education / Experience Equivalency : One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
