Position Information
The Honolulu Zoo is hiring an Assistant Zoo Director to assist in the oversight and management of all aspects of zoo operations, including planning, administration, marketing, public/professional/government relations, public education and interpretation, animal care and exhibition, exhibit maintenance, facilities development, facilities and grounds maintenance, animal research and conservation, and other daily operational needs.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assisting in the development and implementation of policies and standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with association standards as well as state and federal regulations.
- Keeping abreast of applicable state and federal regulations and association standards, including modern zoological practices.
- Assisting in formulating, compiling and preparing annual operating and capital improvement budgets, equipment requirements and revenue projections, to include the justifying and prioritizing proposed projects and expenses.
- Overseeing and executing operational budget and equipment purchases.
- Advising the Zoo Director in matters relating to hiring, classification, labor relations and other personnel matters.
- Performing other duties and responsibilities of the position
Special Work Requirements: May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. On a voluntary basis, serves as a member for the Zoo Dangerous Animal Response Team. If the situation dictates, may need to use firearms during animal escape emergencies. Qualification to possess, carry, and/or have access to firearms and ammunition will be in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with major work in zoology or a related field.
Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Five years of professional experience in the care and exhibition of a wide variety of zoo animals, two of which shall have been in an administrative capacity at a large metropolitan zoo.
Quality of Experience: Having the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as qualifying for the position. Candidates' overall experience must have been of such scope and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Such experience must have demonstrated the following:
- Knowledge of zoo management practices and operations involving the care and exhibition of a wide variety of different species of mammals, birds and reptiles;
- Knowledge of zoo philosophy and zoo education techniques;
- Knowledge of the classification of animals and their world distribution; requirements for feeding, housing, caring and propagating a wide variety of zoo animals;
- Knowledge of zoo animal exhibition requirements, including considerations for public safety, animal comfort, and natural habitats
- Knowledge of budget preparation procedures and requirements and ability to prepare budget estimates;
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and administration;
- Ability to plan, organize and direct the operations of a zoo, including future zoo development and expansion;
- Ability to develop and administer zoo regulations and policies;
- Ability to supervise zoo staff and volunteers;
- Ability to plan, develop and coordinate public relations and education programs and activities to create community interest, awareness and involvement;
- Ability to establish and maintain close and effective working relationships with public and private agencies and organizations, as well as other governmental jurisdictions;
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and correspondence.
