Position Information
The Department of Facility Maintenance, is looking for a Driver Trainer to assist in the implementation of a driver training, heavy construction equipment, and special and new equipment certification program for the Department.
As a Driver Trainer, your duties and responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in implementing a program designed under the requirements of the State of Hawaii Administrative Rules and Regulations Title 19, Chapter 122, to train and evaluate drivers in the Department who operate heavy vehicles of over 15,000 GVW or drivers who need a Class 4 or Commercial Drivers License.
- Conducting training to educate and train drivers to meet the requirements.
- Conducting field testing of drivers on their rigs by requiring them to perform such necessary maneuvers as required by the skills test section of the State of Hawaii.
- Inspecting and testing newly received specialized vehicles/equipment as assigned to assist the Department in accepting the new equipment and to prepare drivers/operators for the correct operation of equipment.
- Performing other duties and responsibilities of the position.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
One year of experience in driver training and/or accident prevention activities, or other related activities involving instructing, advising on, or evaluating motor vehicle operator performance.
Desirable Experience: Experience training others on the safe operation of heavy vehicles and equipment.
Key Knowledge and Skills Needed:
- Knowledge of laws, ordinances, rules and regulations governing the operation of vehicles;
- Knowledge of the operating procedures, design and characteristics of a variety of vehicles, and safety features, devices and precautions pertinent thereto;
- Knowledge of proper and safe driving techniques;
- Ability to conduct driver training and improvement classes,
- Ability to operate and demonstrate the proper operation of various types of vehicles; and
- Ability to objectively evaluate operators of various vehicles.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Required at the time of application:
1. Valid Hawaii commercial driver's license (CDL), Class B.
2. Current State Department of Transportation medical examiner's certificate.
