Work hours may be on an 8- or 12-hour work schedule depending on the specific position. Must be available to work at all locations on Oahu. Use of safety and protective equipment is required due to possible exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions. Work involves possible exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and hazardous materials. Work may involve driving under hazardous road, traffic, and weather conditions; lifting and moving patients under extreme conditions; and working in hazardous surroundings. Over the course of the full-training program, employees attend Mobile Intensive Care Technician (paramedic) classes at Kapiolani Community College and perform progressively difficult emergency medical assignments with the objective of achieving journey-level status at the advanced life support (paramedic) level. Upon completing the full-training program and State licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P), the employee will be converted to initial probationary status as a Mobile Emergency Care Specialist I (AM-09).All persons employed as Emergency Medical Technician II must within a reasonable time progress through to Mobile Emergency Care Specialist I to maintain employment with the City. Continuation in the program will be based upon the successful completion of all phases of training and State licensure in a timely manner. All employees completing the program must agree to work for the City's Emergency Medical Services for two (2) years following State EMT-P licensure.
