As a second-level management position within the department, the Division Director, Adult Probation, plays a critical role in overseeing the administrative planning and coordination of divisional operations. Reporting directly to the Assistant Chief and/or Chief Adult Probation Officer, the Division Director provides leadership, supervises teams, and ensures compliance with court orders and legal requirements. This role demands a high level of professionalism, autonomy, and expertise in evidence-based practices and community supervision trends.
Responsibilities of the Role
Leadership And Representation
Under general direction of Senior Leadership, the APD Division Director is responsible for organizing, planning and direction of the activities of a major division of the Adult Probation Department; coordinates the units both within the division and with other divisions, departments and agencies; and performs related duties as required. Key responsibilities include:
The Division Director represents the department at community events, collaborative operations, and local, state, and national initiatives. They engage with various stakeholders to further the mission of SFAPD and maintain effective partnerships.
Operational Oversight
The role involves managing Supervising Deputy Probation Officers (SPOs), advising on personnel matters, and interpreting policies and procedures. The Division Director monitors casework to ensure compliance with court orders, develops and implements policies, and stays current with effective intervention strategies.
Program And Policy Development
The Director oversees grants, special projects, and new initiatives, aligning them with SFAPD’s mission and vision. They play a pivotal role in fostering innovation and improving departmental practices.
Staff Management
Key responsibilities include recruiting, training, evaluating, and recognizing staff. The Director addresses disciplinary actions when necessary and promotes professional growth opportunities.
Budget And Reporting
The Director assists in budget preparation, tracks performance metrics, and prepares operational reports to support strategic decision-making.
Training: The selected candidate may be required to lead the department’s firearms and internal training programs in coordination with the Chief Deputy and the Chief of SFAPD. Once hired, the candidate would be required to be proficient in laws and regulation pertaining to use of force by probation peace officers, and preferably, be able to demonstrate some leadership experience in these areas.
Reentry and Client Services: The selected candidate may be asked to assume a leadership role at the Department’s Community Assessment Services Center (CASC). Experience working with clients in recovery and an understanding of reentry and reentry services is welcome.
In addition to these responsibilities, the Division Director may supervise a unit, manage special projects, or serve as the acting head of the department in the absence of senior leadership. The position requires flexibility, with work often conducted during non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends. Depending on departmental needs, the role may require the Director to be armed.
