JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the custodial care and maintenance of the city library.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Monitors and maintains the Library’s building structure, systems, and grounds.
· Perform custodial and janitorial tasks throughout the building and on the Library grounds.
· Performs meeting room and special event set up and take down as needed.
· Operates building machinery and equipment utilizing safety precautions.
· Responsible for snow removal, ice control, mowing, trimming and other grounds maintenance;
· Maintains building, maintenance, equipment and cleaning records.
· Supervises part-time staff and volunteers as needed.
· Maintains inventory and supplies; Orders, purchases, and distributes cleaning and maintenance materials and equipment.
· Advises and makes recommendations to insure safe and efficient operation of all buildings, grounds and equipment;
· Works with the Director to arrange for professional repair, and cleaning services and maintenance;
· Provides assistance with inspections and emergency procedures as needed.
· Participates in library meetings and committees as requested by management.
· Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
· Knowledge of city safety policies and procedures.
· Knowledge of the use of various cleaning chemicals.
· Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance principles.
· Skill in operating such cleaning equipment as a vacuum cleaner.
· Skill in the use of ground maintenance equipment.
· Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
· Skill in following instructions.
· Skill in prioritizing work.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Library Director assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
· The work consists of related custodial and maintenance duties. The necessity of working around the public contributes to the complexity of the position.
· The purpose of this position is to maintain the city library. Successful performance contributes to the provision of clean and attractive facilities for employees, citizens, and visitors.
CONTACTS
· Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city employees, vendors, and the general public.
· Contacts are typically to provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
· The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
· The work is typically performed in a library and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
· Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
· Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
