GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the Director of Library Services, responsible for managing, overseeing, and directing the operations, staffing, and program delivery at the South branch of the Abilene Public Library.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Exercises direct supervision over lower-level staff.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Supervise, train, evaluate, and schedule branch staff to ensure adherence to policies, excellent customer service, and a positive work environment.
Manage branch operations in compliance with City and departmental policies and procedures.
Oversee and provide reference, readers advisory, and circulation services to the public.
Maintain a high-quality materials collection by working with the Technical Services division. Recommend new acquisitions, review retrospective materials, and remove outdated or worn items.
Address work methods, challenges, and short and long-term goals for branch operations.
Prepare and maintain accurate reports, records, and statistics; submit monthly branch activity reports to library administration.
Assess the branch service area’s needs. Recommend materials, plan programs, and library services accordingly.
Contribute to departmental budget planning by recommending equipment, staffing, and supply needs to library administration.
Monitor the facility to ensure a safe, attractive environment; promptly report maintenance or safety issues.
Maintain effective communication and work collaboratively with the Mall of Abilene staff, including management and security.
Support system-wide operations by traveling to other branches or City departments for programming and coverage needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of current library operations.
Reference sources, current literature, trends, and developments appropriate to branch collection development and providing programs and services.
Library collection classification and selection tools and techniques, as well as the principles and practices of office management, work organization, and supervision skills.
Online electronic databases and current technologies for the purpose of statistics reports, library procedures and promoting library resources and programs for the public.
Skill to:
Efficiently and effectively interact with the general public, staff and internal customers to provide exemplary library service and programming.
Monitor financial needs of the branch library and advocate for resources as part of the annual budgeting process.
Plan and schedule the workflow of branch staff.
Perform library functions via automated public catalog and circulation system and implement back-up procedures when necessary.
Train and supervise others.
Ability to:

Experience and Training Guidelines:
For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:
Experience:
Four (4) years of experience in professional library work is required.
Two (2) years of supervisory experience is required.
Education/Training:
A Master’s degree in library sciences or information science from an ALA accredited college or university is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Texas driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required
