Definition
This is entrance level aid work in municipal law.
An employee in this class assists professional legal staff by writing briefs, drafting and reviewing contracts, drafting and reviewing legislation, and performing legal research.
Works under the direction of an Assistant Director of Law.
Characteristic Work
Researches and analyzes the law to assist attorneys in assessing legal issues and preparing for cases or arguments in court. Prepares legal arguments, written memorandums, and motions/briefs as directed for attorneys. Prepares, drafts and reviews contracts and legislation. Locates and interviews witnesses. Files required legal documents with Clerk of Federal, State, and local Courts. Organizes discovery and assists in trial and hearing preparation. Reviews, investigates, and conducts hearings pertaining to Claims filed against the City. Obtains necessary documents from involved agencies as required for proper, adequate court action. Assists in review and furnishing of public records. Completes intake for citizen complaints and indigent cremation applications. Assists in Traffic Court and other Municipal Courtrooms. Performs office support duties when necessary and delivers mail and other items to City offices and other locations. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of interrelationships of government agencies.
Ability to present concise logical arguments orally and in writing.
Exceptional attention to detail.
- Positions in the Prosecutor's Office require applicants to be rising 2L.
