An employee in this class provides general assistance for recreation programs, services, and initiatives. The season for employees in this class in the Recreation and Parks division begins April 1 and ends December 1 each year. The season for employees in this class in the Downtown Operations Division begins March 1 and ends November 1 each year.
Works under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor or under general supervision.
Assists program and activity leadership with a variety of recreational services, summer camps, and programs serving diverse populations designed to meet community needs. Represents the City of Akron by responding to the public, citizens, employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. Assists with general office duties such as filing, answering phones, and greeting customers. Gathers supplies to assist program leaders in preparing for and conducting programs and activities. Assists with program marketing and distribution of publicity materials. Assists with concession operations, department wide initiatives, and special events. Provides recreational services and assistance to diverse populations including children, teens, seniors, rental groups, sports participants, etc. Assists with participant registration. Provides set-up or staging assistance and tear-down and clean up assistance at concerts, festivals, special events, and other programs. May assist with food and beverage preparation. Picks up trash, empties waste receptacles, and assists with general cleaning and maintenance activities. Works evening and weekend hours as required by division. Assists with tournaments, evening leagues, special events, and other major recreation or City sponsored events. Adheres to all City and Departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Learns and follows City and Departmental practices and safety procedures. Performs related work as required.Minimum age 16.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to provide excellent customer service. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public. Ability to effectively work with a diverse population. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations. Ability to lift items weighing up to 30 pounds. RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
