This is routine semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City water distribution system and related appurtenances.
An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks, usually as a member of a crew, in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water mains, services, hydrants, valves, and related appurtenances.
Works under close supervision. May perform heavy physical tasks in all types of weather.
Operates front-end loader and forklift to load, move, and carry materials Drives utility trucks, pickup trucks, and dump trucks to and from job sites, delivers and hauls equipment and materials. Sets up barricades, flags, lights, and cones to warn motorists. Tows, sets up, and operates air compressors. Notifies area residents of water shut-offs, disruptions, and construction or traffic inconveniences. Digs up water mains, services, hydrants, and valves with pneumatic, electric, hand, and other tools. Sets up and operates pumps to drain water from excavations. Probes holes being dug for underground service lines, utility ducts, and cables. Assists in repairing water mains and in laying new mains. Assists in installing and repairing water services. Assists in the installation, replacement, and repair of hydrants. Assists in the installation and repair of valves, curb boxes, curb pits, and related water distribution system appurtenances. Paints and flushes fire hydrants. Directs traffic around street excavations. Sets up tools and materials used at job sites. Backfills holes and tamps dirt using hand and power tools. Cleans sidewalks and lawn strips. Assists skilled trade persons in facility maintenance work such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general cleaning. Maintains facility grounds areas and restores construction sites by mowing, raking, fertilizing, planting, and general clean-up. Performs related work as required.
A minimum of one year of paid experience as a laborer or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED EDUCATION OR TRAINING. Possession of a valid State of Ohio class B commercial driver's license without airbrake restriction.
Basic knowledge of the methods and techniques of water distribution system installation, maintenance, and repair.
Ability to perform water system installation, maintenance, and repair tasks. Ability to understand and follow simple oral instructions. Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public. Ability to perform strenuous and hazardous work in all types of weather. Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and construction equipment. Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools. Ability to lift up to 80 pounds. This is a classified position.
The candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on information, records, and other data related to the candidate's ability to perform the duties of the position. In order to be placed on the eligibility list, qualifying applicants will be required to pass a physical ability test to demonstrate their ability to perform the essential functions of the position. If your name is placed on the eligibility list, your name will remain on the eligibility list for one year unless you are removed in accordance with Human Resource policy.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.
RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
DRIVER'S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
