The purpose of this classification is to perform technical, skilled and semi-skilled work functions associated with the installation, repair and maintenance of water meters, automated meter reading equipment (AMR), and related equipment.Performs various technical and mechanical work functions associated with installation, repair and maintenance of water meters and related equipment, which may include installing/removing water meters, installing/replacing water cutoff valves, installing/replacing water meter boxes and lids, repairing meters and cutoff valves, repairing water leaks, programming meters.
Performs water flow and pressure tests.
Tests accuracy of meters to ensure compliance with established standards; investigates and solves irregularities in meter readings and electronic readings.
Maintains records of meter readings, meter numbers, work performed and related activities; locates and raises covered meter boxes to grade; maintains areas adjacent to water meters.
Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools associated with the installation, repair and maintenance of water meters and related systems, which may include a dump truck, backhoe, forklift, cutting torch, drill press, electronic meter/reading programmer, meter testing equipment, pipe locator, jackhammer, air compressor, post hole digger, shovel, axe, mechanic tools, plumbing tools, tapping machine, boomtruck, boring machine, pipe saw, etc.
Operates a motor vehicle to conduct meter repair activities; transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to maintain machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning shop and work areas, etc.; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Assists in maintaining inventory of departmental meters, equipment, tools, supplies and materials; conducts physical counts of meter inventories as needed.
Prepares, receives, reads and/or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, work orders, maps, blueprints, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, city departments, customers, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.
Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, email, or other software.
May be required to be on-call in the event of an emergency, work weekends, holidays, special events and over-time

Performs other related duties as required.High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by Vocational/Technical training in Mechanics, Meter Repair, or related field; supplemented by two (2) years previous experience or training involving maintenance, operation, installation, repair and/or testing of water meters/automated meter reading equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid Georgia Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a GA Water Distribution System Operator certification or the ability to obtain within six months.
