What are the responsibilities and job description for the PUBLIC WORKS WATER OPERATOR/MAINTENANCE WORKER position at City of Aledo TX?
Job Summary:
Under direction of the Public Works Superintendent and Public Works Crew Leader, the Public Works Maintenance Worker performs maintenance duties related to the City’s water distribution system, sewer collection system, lawn/landscape, irrigation repairs and City’s streets and signs. This position performs day-to-day operations in the Public Works Department as assigned daily.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
WATER AND SEWER
- Maintains and repairs components of the sanitary sewer collection system such as mains, manholes, and cleanouts.
- Maintains and repairs components of the water distribution system such as water quality, pipes and lines, valves, fire hydrants, and meters.
- Locates, installs, and maintains both water and sewer systems.
- Repairs water and sewer system leaks or line stoppages.
- Repairs manholes.
- Installs new water and sewer taps.
INFRASTRUCTURE
- Performs ditch line cleanouts.
- Assists with excavation of buried utility lines.
- Performs street maintenance such as pothole repairs and crack sealing.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
- Assists in setting up work zone traffic control.
- Performs maintenance, including mowing, weed eating, tree trimming etc.
- Collects and removes debris from streets and right of way areas.
- Cleans storm drain inlets and flumes as needed.
- Plants and maintains landscape materials in parks, sidewalks, median strips, and other designated areas using appropriate equipment.
- Pulls weeds, prunes shrubs, and performs other related duties.
- Collects and disposes of trash from all parks designated throughout the City.
EQUIPMENT
- Operates dump truck, backhoe, excavator, skid steer, sewer jetting machine, loaders, mowers, weed eaters, sprayers, tractors, and other necessary equipment.
- Maintains assigned tools, equipment, and vehicle in proper working and safe operating condition.
- Performs daily and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Uses appropriate materials and equipment to complete assigned work according to specifications, verbal instructions, and established procedures.
WORK ORDERS
- Completes daily work orders including new service connections and disconnections for non-payment.
TRASH COLLECTION
- Collects and disposes of trash from all parks designated throughout the City.
EMERGENCIES AND SPECIAL EVENTS
- Assists with special events and community center set up.
- Assists in emergency operations.
OTHER
- Works on call to support City operations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- May perform portions of the work of higher classified positions occasionally, as assigned.
- May perform duties of similar complexity in any City department as required or assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge of:
- Water distribution.
- Concrete and asphalt street maintenance methods.
- City geography including street locations.
- Department safety rules and procedures.
Skills in:
- Operating a variety of power tools, hand tools, and various construction and excavation equipment.
- Working under stress and using good judgment in emergency situations.
- Tactfully responding to requests and inquiries from the general public.
- Establishing effective working relationships with employees. Working as a team.
- Following written and oral instructions.
Education/Training/Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- No experience required; one year experience performing manual labor preferred.
- Candidates must obtain a Water and/or Wastewater Class D License within 12 months of hire. Preference will be given to applicants who have already completed the TCEQ D Water License.
- A valid Texas driver’s license.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
The employee must have the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull greater than 50 pounds, and may require infrequent lifting of greater than 100 pounds. This position is exposed to extreme elements including extreme heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, noise intensity level, moving mechanical parts/hazards, dirt/dust, and odors. Constant use of protective personnel equipment, including but not limited to: footwear, eyewear, and use of reflective clothing is required.
