Under general supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor, the Senior Wastewater Utility Worker leads a crew and performs journey level work in the maintenance and repair of wastewater collection facilities; operates heavy equipment and tools in a highly skilled manner; leads an assigned crew; and performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED :

Supervision is provided by the Wastewater Supervisor.

The Senior Wastewater Utility Worker may perform the duties of Wastewater Supervisor in their absence.

Essential Job Functions

Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following : (These functions may not be present in all positions in this classification. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind work assignments as needed.)

Performs a variety of activities associated with the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of sewer and storm drain facilities and equipment; oversees the maintenance of lift stations, CCTV production, USA marking, and stormwater system and sanitary maintenance; utilizes proper safety techniques and uses equipment in accordance with Cal-OSHA and City safety policies and procedures; operates a variety of light, medium, and heavy-duty motorized equipment and vehicles such as a sewer jetter / vacuum truck, dump truck, pick-up trucks, CCTV for sewer line inspection, and a variety of other hand-held, hydraulic, power tools, and motorized equipment; supervises and trains an assigned crew; assists other City department, contractors, and the public on sewer related matters; assists in the procurement of equipment; and performs other related duties as assigned. Maintains regular attendance.

Qualification Guidelines

To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is :

Education and / or Experience :

High School Diploma or GED equivalent and three years of increasingly responsible experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of a municipal sewer system infrastructure are required.

Knowledge of :

Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of mains, lift stations, pumps, valves, manholes, and sewer facilities; record keeping and reporting procedures; and safe work practices.

Ability to :

Read and interpret construction plans and specifications; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; understand and communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other City employees.

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Class "B" California Driver's License is required. Possession of a Grade 2 Collection System Maintenance certificate issued by the California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, or more than 75 pounds with assistance; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods of time; and get from one location to another in the course of doing business. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading work related documents and using the computer, and acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service.

WORK ENVIRONMENT :

Employee generally works outdoors. Employee will travel to different locations and be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and / or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.

SELECTION PROCESS :

Applicants must complete an application online prior to the final filing date. Successful candidates must achieve a minimum passing score in each of the test components. Applicants will be notified by e-mail as to the test date, time, and location. Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment physical and may be required to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination as part of the selection process. Candidates who do not pass will be disqualified and removed from the eligibility list.

Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive 2% @ 62 benefit formula underwhich the employee pays 7.75% as a contribution to the PEPRA plan. Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six-month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be enrolled in the 2.7% @ 55 benefit formula underwhich the employee pays 8% of the employee contribution to PERS. The City offers a Section 125 cafeteria benefit plan. The City does not participate in the Social Security System. City paid leave time (sick, vacation and holiday) available in accordance with City policies.
