Pay Rate: $22.00 per hour
Department: Parks and Recreation

GENERAL PURPOSE

To ensure the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to all emergencies; prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring at the aquatic facility. Assist in the supervision and training of the lifeguard team and cashiers; conducting facility safety checks; and communicating staff and equipment needs to Assistant Pool Manager, Pool Manager or Aquatics Program Manager. .

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Head Lifeguards work under the direct supervision of the Assistant Aquatics Manager, Manager, Pool Manager and/or Aquatics Program Coordinator, Recreation Program Specialist(s) and Director of Parks and Recreation.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Responsible for direct supervision of Lifeguards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

" Demonstrate safety driven and responsible decision-making regarding daily operations of aquatics facilities.
" Orients new lifeguards to job duties and responsibilities. Ensures that all lifeguards are current on their training and certifications.
" Identifies problems and problem solve with team members to create effective solutions as needed.
" Assist in maintaining aquatic staff work schedules 2 weeks in advance, which includes a supervisor to be on-site during all operating hours.
" Assist to organize effective and efficient lifeguard rotations and/or lifeguard stations utilizing Ask Drills, Zone Test Drills, LIVE Recognition Drills, Lifeguard Station Response Time Testing, and Multiple Rescuer Response Drills.
" Serves as backup Lifeguard or Cashier when needed.
" Oversees other Lifeguards including Cedar Pool, Mack Pool, Irving Pool, and Bucky Boyle Spray Park.
" Assists to maintain accurate records for all aspects of facility management including, but not limited to scheduling, timesheets, water quality logs, first aid logs, incident/accident reports, bottom check logs, facility safety checks, facility cleanliness, manifest reports, supply and inventory logs.
" Assists with all facility program planning and operations, including special events.
" Clears the pool and facility in the event of inclement weather or a severe aquatics emergency.
" Communicates with management and/or of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments and repairs.
" Responsible to conduct all daily opening and closing procedures; assign task(s) to staff as needed and appropriate.
" Reports all needed supplies to APC and coordinates requisition of supplies in a timely manner.
" On-site attendance at the facility is an essential and required function of this position.
" Provide quality customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens and internal departments.
" Performs related work as required, specifically, for the successful operation of assigned aquatic facility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and experience:

A. 18 years of age or older, preferred
B. High School graduate or equivalent
C. Two (2) seasons of paid lifeguard experience or previous lifeguard supervisory experience
D. Maintain current, valid certification in or the ability to pass all of the following:
" American Red Cross Lifeguarding
" American Red Cross First Aid
" American Red CPR&AED for the Professional Rescuer (certification program(s) offered by the City of Allentown Parks and Recreation)
" Additional certifications required by local or state laws
E. Successful completion of pre-employment lifeguard knowledge and skills check
F. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, preferred
G. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

A. Knowledge of water rescue methods and techniques.
B. Knowledge of swimming strokes and aquatic techniques.
C. Knowledge of first aid and CPR principles and procedures.
D. Skill in swimming, lifeguarding, first aid and CPR.
E. Ability to pass swimming test as required.
F. Ability to supervise the work of subordinate lifeguards and other pool personnel.
G. Ability to exercise tact and judgment in maintaining order and discipline, and in enforcing pool regulations.
H. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants and the public.
I. Ability to swim a minimum of 900 yards per week (three, 300 yard swims).
J. Ability to work independently and as a team with other lifeguards, facility staff and management.
K. Effective decision-making skills and conflict-resolution skills.

" First Aid Supplies: Resuscitation Masks, Bag-Valve Masks, Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
" Pool Maintenance Equipment: Skimmers, Extension Poles, Pool Vacuum, Water Quality Test Kits
" Filter Room, as needed: Chlorinator, Hair Catcher, Filtration System, Slides/Special Features
" Lifeguard Stands
" Programming Supplies and Equipment
" General Office Supplies
" General Cleaning Supplies and Equipment
" Cash Register(s)
" Digital Camera/Memory Card
" Concessions Stand Equipment, as required, specific to facility
" Other equipment and tools as needed

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to maintain visual, sit and talk and hear. The employee is required to walk; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

Employee is required to demonstrate all applicable swimming, CPR/First Aid/AED and Lifeguarding rescue skills. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and pool mechanical systems. The employee occasionally is exposed to wet and dry conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment varies. Weather conditions in the work environment varies. The employee may be exposed to stressful situations as a result of human behavior.
