Assistant City Attorney (Part-Time)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

This is a professional, part-time, on-site position in the City Attorney's Office. An individual in this position will provide legal services to the City Alvin as directed by and under the supervision of the City Attorney.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serve as legal advisor for the Police Department, Code Compliance Department, and other City departments as required. Research, review, and analyze applicable statutes and case law and advise police officers, code compliance officers, and other city employees regarding legal issues pertaining to detection, investigation, and prosecution of criminal cases and enforcement actions; advise police and code compliance officers and others regarding changes in law and/or procedures.
• Prosecute misdemeanor criminal and civil (including Code violations) in Municipal Court, including both bench and jury trials; draft and review complaints and motions; review investigatory reports; interview complainants and witnesses; and confer with police, detectives, Code Enforcement and Animal Control officers, the District Attorney, and others, as necessary.
• Provide legal guidance and assistance with employee disciplinary investigations; represent the City in defense of police officer disciplinary actions at various hearings including Civil Service Commission hearings and third-party arbitrations.
• Review and respond to Texas Public Information Act requests received by the Police Department and responsive records to timely respond to or request Attorney General Opinions regarding exceptions to release.
• Draft, analyze, and review a broad range of transactional instruments, including ordinances, resolutions, policies, inter-local agreements, memorandum of understanding, economic development agreements, and other various contracts.

Starting Salary is $74,053 a year.
