Job Description
Encourages reading and the use of the Library by young people and their families through story times and other literacy-based activities. Develops and implements special services, programs, and outreach under the direction of the Branch Librarian and the general guidance of the Youth Coordinator. Assists patrons in finding needed books and/or information. Must be willing to work in other areas as needed. May be responsible for operation of the branch on assigned evenings and Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays in the absence of Branch Head. Must be eager to assist people.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists patrons, youth and adult, in locating books and/or information by interviewing patrons to ascertain their needs and assists patrons in the use of public access computers as needed.
- Works in partnership with the youth and adult services staff at the branch to plan and implement youth and family programming.
- Promotes library programs and services; creates displays that emphasize the Amarillo Public Library and the services it offers to the community.
- Maintains youth fiction, nonfiction, and audiovisual collections. Also may assist with the maintenance of the adult collections as directed by the Branch Librarian.
- Responsible for shelving library materials when shelver is absent or needs assistance.
- Assists in circulation with charging and discharging books, updating patron files, issuing cards, etc.
- Keeps informed of current events and new books being published in order to provide Reader’s Advisory to the public and makes recommendations for collection development to the Branch Librarian.
- Assists patrons in obtaining materials not readily available by reserving items and completing interlibrary loan requests.
- Explains library policies and procedures to the public.
- Assists Branch Librarian in the implementation of outreach activities.
- Prepares lists of books in special subject areas for use of the patron as needed.
- Conducts tours of branch for area groups and organizations.
- Works closely with all other Library branches and City departments to provide the maximum amount of service to the public.
- Records number of questions answered, phone calls received, and patron contacts daily.
- Responsible for preparing reports and forms as needed, such as statistical reports and cash reports.
- Responsible for other duties as required.

Licenses/Certification
Required Qualifications
Completion of a bachelor’s degree at a recognized college or university or the completion of at least 90 hours undergraduate work at a recognized college or university is required; preference will be given to individuals with previous library experience and/or fluency in Spanish. Must have knowledge of basic research techniques. Job requires night and weekend work. Must work every 4th Sunday. Must be eager to serve the public courteously and be able to work tactfully and harmoniously with others.

Good health is required. Full performance of duties requires much physical stamina. Must be able to walk briskly, stand for considerable periods of time, lift and carry stacks of books weighing up to 20 pounds, push loaded book trucks for short distances — all of which requires agility in stooping, lifting, and bending. Position requires evening and some weekend work (alternating Fridays and Saturdays, plus one Sunday every four weeks). Patience, courtesy, and a helpful attitude are required in this highly visible position.
