SUMMARY
Under supervision, this position performs a variety of inspections of buildings and properties to ensure compliance with City of Amarillo Municipal Code: inspection of plumbing, mechanical, irrigation, and buildings to insure compliance with ICC code requirements to the related city water and sewer utility regulations to insure the health and well being of the public. Assists other inspectors, as needed, in enforcement of other ordinances. Answers technical questions both in person and on the phone. Review construction documents for compliance with all applicable codes. No supervision of others.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs inspections of plumbing systems such as water, gas, drainage and venting systems in all types of building to ensure compliance ICC Codes compliance.
- Investigate complaints to ensure compliance of the City of Amarillo Municipal Codes.
- Provides information to the public regarding the requirements and policies of the City.
- Communicates and maintains a strong professional relationship with other agencies and contractors.
- May be required to file suits, prepare cases, and testify in Municipal Court.
- Provides documentation of inspections and researches property and inspection history utilizing necessary software and equipment.
- Collaborates with the other construction inspectors to ensure compliance with construction codes and defers inspections to those as needed.
- Assists other trade area’s inspections within department that are assigned by supervisor or Building Official.
- Able to reading and understand construction documents.
- Enters data for inspections, must be able to route and manage daily work load.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent.
- A minimum of one year of experience in public relations or high public contact.
- Must hold current and valid State of Texas Journeyman or Master plumbing license for at least four years. If out of state, must be able to obtain Texas Plumbing license within one year.
- Must be able to obtain Texas State Plumbing Inspectors License within probationary period.
- Must obtain the ICC Residential Plumbing Inspector and International Energy Conservation Code certifications within one year of employment.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License required or obtain within 30 days of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Must have strong written and verbal communication skills necessary to understand and communicate technical requirements to the public.
- Ability to use measuring tape, level, ladder, code books and drive a City vehicle (pick up).
- Knowledge of and ability to use written reference material for Code, standards, and references.
- Knowledge of construction standards in commercial and residential plumbing installation.
- Must be able to understand and review construction plans.
- Must have good computer skill and the ability to use various computer applications for posting inspections and research.
- Ability to operate highly technical computer applications, such as GIS or CAD.
- Basic drafting and mathematical skills
- Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines, fax machine or multiline telephone systems.

WORK ENVIROMENT
- Must be able to withstand rigors of motivating various hazards to include in and around construction sites through all weather conditions and maintain acute sensory perceptions of surrounding environment to perform inspections.
- Must be able to ascend or descend ladders etc. to access above grade structure of any height during construction process
- Driving to and from numerous different sites throughout the city to perform inspections.
- Normal work hours are Monday-Friday 8 am – 5 pm; possible flex hours. Subject to after hours and weekend inspections.
