SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Assistant Solid Waste Service Coordinator/Solid Waste Service Coordinator, this position is responsible for the operation of assigned trucks and/or equipment. This position is responsible for the operation of assigned trucks and/or equipment such as a side loader, brush truck, rear loader, front loader, grapple truck, or other trucks as necessary. This position may also be indirectly responsible for up to two other persons as assigned by the supervisor. This position, depending on assignment may operate a roll-off truck, or tractor-trailer from the Transfer Station to the Landfill and back. Operator is responsible for cleaning, maintaining, and checking trucks and equipment daily. Repairs minor problems on equipment as needed. This position will work various shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operates solid waste equipment on assigned route.
- Unloads the solid waste collected at the transfer station.
- Inspects washes and cleans the interior cab, compaction area and exterior of equipment.
- Performs minor repairs to equipment as assigned.
- Performs equipment inspections and completes inspection reports.
- Completes daily task reports, reporting all unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- Operates roll-off truck, transfer truck and trailers and performs daily check on vehicles.
- Pushes trash into push pit with front end loader when supervisor or operator needs assistance.
- Cleans downstairs at the lower packing units with the backhoe when indicated by supervisor or operator.
- Helps spot trucks on Transfer Station floor when necessary.
- Drives vehicle, in accordance with all traffic laws, in a manner that will prevent any chargeable accidents, incidents or passenger injuries.
- Operates solid waste equipment on assigned routes, which could include heavy traffic and may also require the driver to drive and/or back into narrow alleys or streets.
- Collects solid waste using automated collection and processing equipment as well as manual collection of solid waste.
- Learns all the various routes throughout the city within a specified amount of time.
- Assists with Maintenance and cleanup of the Transfer Station as needed.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Valid Class A or B Texas Commercial Driver’s License required. Completion of professional truck driving school in the operation of tractor-trailers is preferred. Prior experience in operating a backhoe, and medium and large trucks is preferred. High School Diploma or GED preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to drive a semi-tractor and trailer, roll-off truck, backhoe, side loader, front end loader, and use mechanical tools, power washer, and hand tools.
- Ability to read maps, route printouts, or instructions is required.
- Ability to operate solid waste trucks and equipment safely in varied weather and traffic conditions while avoiding hazards.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of the hydraulic controls on the solid waste trucks/equipment.
- Knowledge of mechanical operation of diesel equipment.
- Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
- Ability to operate different types of equipment as deemed necessary by the Solid Waste Department.
- Ability to operate a side loader and front loader truck.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to operate computers and other basic office equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The employee works in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others. This position will be required to work overtime depending on the needs of the department as well as various shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather-essential personnel.
