Function
The City of Ankeny is accepting applications for full-time Firefighter EMT or Paramedic.
Applications are being accepted that will establish an eligibility list in June 2025 for fulltime Firefighter EMT or Paramedic.
Written and physical ability evaluations are required for all positions. Information packets will be emailed to qualified applicants explaining the written and physical ability evaluation process and applicable dates for completing each process.
Successful completion of post-offer criminal background screening, drug test, psychological and medical physical required. Excellent wage and benefit package. Work schedule is a 24 hour on / 48 hour off rotation averaging 2912 hours per year after attending the required Fire and EMS Academy, and Paramedic Training, if applicable.
Effective 07 / 01 / 2024, starting salary pay is : EMT $61,857, Paramedic $69,500 - $80,452 depending on years of experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Responds to emergencies and performs pre-hospital care, fire suppression activities, rescue, damage control, and property preservation.
Entry Requirements and Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions in English.
- Ability to write in English with a minimum number of spelling and grammatical errors.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and function as a team member.
- Shall be enrolled and attending an Emergency Medical Technician course or be certified as an EMT or Paramedic at the time of application.

WORKING CONDITIONS :
Effective July 1, 2022
Fire Union Employees : 24 Hour Personnel
Vacation :
after 1 year - 120 hours
after 5 years - 168 hours
after 10 years - 216 hours
after 15 years - 288 hours
Personal :
Each year on July 1, fulltime shift employees shall receive five (5) 24 hours shifts off to be taken at any time during the fiscal year. There will be no carryover of these paid personal time days.
Pro-rated based on employee hire date :
Between July 1 - October 1 - five (5) 24 hours - 120 hours
After October 1 - before January 1 - four (4) 24 hours - 96 hours
After January 1 - before April 1 - three (3) 24 hours - 72 hours
After April 1 - before July 1 - two (2) 24 hours - 48 hours
Sick :
Earn sick leave after thirty (30) days of consecutive service - rate of 16.8 hours per month.
