Under the general supervision of the Clive Fire Department Officers, provides emergency medical care to sick and injured persons, controls and extinguishes fires, performs rescue, protects life and property and maintains equipment.
Examples of Essential Job Functions
- Responds to calls, for the potential for emergency medical service.
- Within the limits of his/her medical certification, provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured.
- Within the limits of his/her medical certification, operates and maintains emergency medical equipment.
- Communicates with hospital emergency departments, nurses, physicians and physician designees.
- Completes a pre-hospital medical report on all patients seen treated or transported.
- Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls. Selects hose nozzle, depending on type of fire, and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire.
- Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings to assist individuals from burning structures.
- Creates openings in buildings for ventilation.
- Protects property from water and smoke by use of waterproof salvage covers, smoke ejector and fans.
- Communicates with others during emergency operations with radio or portable telephone.
- Maintains apparatus, buildings and equipment.
- Participates in drills, demonstrations and courses in emergency medical care techniques, firefighting techniques and other emergency skills.
- Regular attendance is essential for this position.
Essential Job Tasks (Reference: NFPA 1582)
- Performing fire-fighting tasks (e.g., hose line operations, extensive crawling, lifting and carrying heavy objects, ventilating roofs or walls using power or hand tools, forcible entry), rescue operations, and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions while wearing personal protective ensembles and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), including working in extremely hot or cold environments for prolonged time periods.
- Wearing an SCBA, which includes a demand valve-type positive-pressure face piece and HEPA filter masks, which require the ability to tolerate increased respiratory workloads.
- Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (infectious) and non-biological hazards, and/or heated gases, despite the use of personal protective ensembles and SCBA.
- Climbing six or more flights of stairs while wearing fire protective ensemble weighing at least 50 lb (22.6 kg) or more and carrying equipment/tools weighing an additional 20 to 40 lb (9 to 18 kg).
- Wearing fire protective ensemble that is encapsulating and insulated, which will result in significant fluid loss that frequently progresses to clinical dehydration and can elevate core temperature to levels exceeding 102.2 degrees F (39 degrees C).
- Searching, finding, and rescue-dragging or carrying victims ranging from newborns up to adults weighing over 200 lb (90 kg) to safety despite hazardous conditions and low visibility.
- Advancing water-filled hose lines up to 2 ½ in. (65 mm) in diameter from fire apparatus to occupancy [approximately 150 ft (50 m)], which can involve negotiating multiple flights of stairs, ladders, and other obstacles.
- Climbing ladders, operating from heights, walking or crawling in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces, and operating in proximity to electrical power lines and/or other hazards.
- Unpredictable emergency requirements for prolonged periods of extreme physical exertion without benefit of warm-up, scheduled rest periods, meals, access to medications(s), or hydration.
- Operating fire apparatus or other vehicles in an emergency mode with emergency lights and sirens.
- Critical, time-sensitive, complex problem solving during physical exertion in stressful, hazardous environments, including hot, dark, tightly enclosed spaces that is further aggravated by fatigue flashing lights, sirens, and other distractions.
- Ability to communicate (give and comprehend verbal orders) while wearing personal protective ensembles and SCBA under conditions of high background noise, poor visibility, ad drenching from hose lines and/or fixed protection systems (sprinklers).
- Functioning as an integral component of a team, where sudden incapacitation of a member can result in mission failure or in risk of injury or death to civilians or other team members.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Education Required
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Training Required
EMT- B certified through the Iowa Department of Health, current BLS
Firefighter I certified through the State of Iowa
Experience Preferred
2 years EMT- B
2 years firefighting
Required Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must obtain a valid Commercial Driver License issued by the State of Iowa
Shall generally be available for off-hour meetings, phone calls and special assignments
Must pass department physical ability test
Pass a physical fitness examination by a medical agency approved by the Clive Fire Department
Must live within 30 miles or 30 minutes of the city limits of Clive

Physical Characteristics of the Job

However, occasionally the employee may be forced to push, pull, or lift extremely heavy objects such as a human or a motor vehicle.
Environmental Conditions
The work is performed both inside and outside and includes seasonal exposure to cold and heat. The worker is also exposed to darkness and poor lighting, fumes/odors, isolation, moving machinery, noise, visual strain, unprotected heights, wearing a respirator, working on uneven ground, mechanical hazards, biological hazards, medical and bodily injury. Also, the work may expose the employee to significant work pace pressure, and irregular hours.

Must meet visual requirements to obtain a Commercial Driver License from the State of Iowa.
