What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker position at City of Apache Junction?
(Anticipated Hiring Range $19.63 - $20.62/hour) Positions assigned to this class perform a variety of entry-level construction and maintenance related service activities.The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. Pre-employment Requirements
Candidates who are selected for appointment may be required to be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation. Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a vehicle in Arizona or meet the transportation needs of the position.
License/Certification
Depending on assignment, it may be required to obtain Pool Operator Certification within six (6) months of appointment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work includes walking and operation of a vehicle, landscaping equipment and various power tools. Working outdoors in extreme heat and or cold weather temperatures. May involve climbing ladders. Requires moderate exertion and lifting carrying objects between 50 to 100 pounds, repeated bending, stooping and reaching above the head daily. Performs construction and maintenance functions requiring visual and manual dexterity and precision measurements and continuous repetitive arm, hand and eye movement. May be exposed to high voltage and hazardous chemicals. Work a varying work schedule which includes nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours during emergencies.
- Water, mow, weed, trim, renovate and fertilize turf; trim and prune trees and shrubs; stake trees.
- Plant, water and maintain landscaped areas.
- Monitor public areas to remove safety hazards; inspect playgrounds, doors, windows, structures and other equipment and facilities; report and complete forms and logs.
- Empty trash receptacles and transport waste to proper disposal location and litter clean-up.
- Open, prepare and close facilities; prepares and maintains athletic fields.
- Operate various equipment such as pick-up trucks, saws, small tools, power tools, plotters, concrete mixers and weed eaters.
- Assist in performing basic construction, maintenance and repair work involving concrete, drainage structures, retaining walls, pipe lines, masonry, metal work, wood work, fencing, irrigation, swimming pools, and basic electrical.
- May maintain the maintenance and operation of the swimming pool (aquatics).
- May assist with dead animal removal; pest control such as bees and snakes.
- May inspect and clear or clean debris from parking lots, walkways, ditches, alleys, streets and storm drains; perform work in emergency situations as required.
- Support the City’s policies, goals and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.

- City and Department procedures, policies and guidelines; City Code; Arizona Revised Statutes; Occupational Health and Safety Association standards and regulations; electrical code.
- General maintenance practices and techniques.
- Safety procedures; proper use of equipment, tools and personal protective equipment. Injury prevention and proper use of equipment, tools and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Performing general tasks in various trades such as carpentry, masonry and construction.
Skills
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other individuals in contact during the course of work; communicating clearly and concisely; following instructions.
- Operating maintenance equipment including small power tools, mowers, line trimmers, blowers, tractors and small dump trucks.
- Working independently with little or no supervision.
- Identifying proper equipment and safety gear needed for each project.
- Swimming pool operation and maintenance.
- Read and interpret basic maps, written directions and work orders.
