General Description

Under general supervision, responsible for the organization, promotion, and implementation water safety operations, staff training, and pool operations and City of Apopka aquatic facilities. Provides customer service and assists with the maintenance and management of pool operations; responds to emergencies at assigned aquatic facility. Supervises and trains lifeguard staff. Assists with development and execution of pool and aquatic programming at City of Apopka aquatic facilities. Work is performed under the direction of the Events Manager with considerable independent judgment, initiative, and supervision. Work is reviewed through observation and consultation.

Essential Job Functions

  • Inspects aquatic facility prior to open to ensure facility is safe to operate and pool water is maintained at appropriate chemical levels.
  • Reports and eliminates any hazardous or unsafe conditions or equipment.
  • Ensure the safety of aquatic facility users.
  • Observes and enforces all aquatics rules and regulations, for both the staff and public.
  • Responds to emergency situations, performs rescue work, and administers first aid as required.
  • Keeps all required aquatic facility records and reports up to date and submits to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Ensures assigned facility/areas are kept clean.
  • Assists with the development and execution of all aquatics programming at City of Apopka aquatic facilities.
  • Ensures aquatic programs are run efficiently and effectively with an emphasis on safety.
  • Provides front-line customer service aquatic facility users and the general public.
  • Trains and certifies all City of Apopka Lifeguard Staff. Maintains training and certification records/logs.
  • Work requires constant public contact, use of the telephone, reading, writing, typing, very frequent walking, sitting, standing and occasional lifting of 40 lbs., bending, stooping, running, pushing, pulling, kneeling, crawling, climbing, and reaching overhead.
  • May work in extreme weather. 
  • Must be available to work on evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
  • Performs other duties or tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to plan, organize, and successfully operate aquatic programming and pool operations.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of aquatic rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Considerable skill ability as a swimmer; considerable skill and ability in rescue work, CPR, and first aid.
  • Ability to supervise lifeguard staff and coordinate staff scheduling.
  • Ability to administer swim testing to swimmers to determine swimmer abilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other city employees, officials, sponsors, volunteers, civic groups and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; as well as the ability to understand and effectively carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Ability to type, hear, speak, read, write, edit, swim, and run.
  • Ability to safely operate a utility care and other City vehicles.
  • Familiarity with computers and word-processing in general and initiative to learn all facets of software as may be utilized for maximum utilization.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. AA degree is desirable. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Minimum one-year experience in performing progressively responsible lifeguard and/or water safety duties.
  • Requires American Red Cross Lifeguard certification; American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor/Instructor Trainer certification is desirable.
  • A combination of education and experience may qualify a candidate for consideration.
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida driver's license.

EQUIPMENT USED

Water safety and lifeguard equipment/tools, life vests, canoes/kayaks, pool pumps and water chemical test kits, communication equipment, computers, adding machine, typewriter, copy machine, multi-line phone system, fax machine, hand tools, variety of sports equipment, and various motor vehicles.

Physical Requirements

Works frequently in extreme weather.

JOB LOCATION

Located primarily at Camp Wewa, 221 S. Binion Road, Apopka, FL 32746 and the Northwest Recreation Complex, 3710 Jason Dwelley Parkway, Apopka, FL 32712. May work out of any City Parks and Recreation facility, depending on program, event, or need.
