Nature of Work
The Seasonal – Appleton Police Department Evidence Intern is a part-time non-paid position. Work involves assisting the civilian Forensic Evidence Specialists in the Identification Unit. Interns shall be supervised at all times during their work within the evidence unit. This position serves under the primary supervision of the Forensic Evidence Specialists.
Job Functions
- Report to the Appleton Police Department on time when scheduled and call the Identification Unit with early notification if they are unable to report as scheduled.
- Comply with the same rules and policies required of all Appleton Police Department employees.
- Notify the Identification Unit of any arrest or citation they may receive for all traffic, misdemeanor, and/or felony charges.
- Perform the tasks outlined in the internship guidelines to the best of their abilities.
- Researching, processing, and scanning evidence dispositions.
- Assisting with the evidence room audit.
- Assisting with evidence storage.
- Restocking supplies.
- Answering phone calls.
- Assisting with property returns and sending property return letters.
- Providing support with basic post-processing of evidence/vehicles.
- Completing Wisconsin State Crime Lab transmittals.
- Data entry.
- Assisting with Evidence Unit related projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements of Work
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- College graduate OR current enrollment in a college or technical college and pursuing a degree in a related field.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Acceptable personal and professional history as determined by the successful completion of a background check.
- Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform work in a multi-task environment.
- Dependable, with a sense of responsibility and reliability.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
Security and confidentiality are essential to the Identification Unit. The Evidence Intern(s) should never discuss any confidential information with those outside of the Identification Unit’s direct chain of command.
The Evidence Intern(s) will be supervised at all times during their time in the Identification Unit.
Supplemental Information
Duration: June - AugustSchedule: Monday through Friday.
This is an unpaid, non-benefited, part-time internship. The Evidence Intern(s) must be present a minimum of 24 hours each week. College credit may be available.
While the Evidence Intern(s) will be exposed to many aspects of the Identification Unit, there are some restrictions. They are as follows:
- Intern(s) will not have unsupervised access to the Evidence Room.
- Intern(s) will need to be accompanied by Identification Unit staff at all times.
- Intern(s) will not be allowed to carry a firearm or any other weapon.
- Intern(s) will not take part in call-ins or go to crime scenes.
- Intern(s) will not be allowed to operate any department vehicle.
- Intern(s) must lock or sign out of computers when leaving them unoccupied.
