About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Parks Maintenance Worker in the Parks & Recreation Department. Our Parks & Recreation team is dedicated to maintaining Asheville’s 72 parks and miles of greenways, ensuring safe, clean, and enjoyable spaces for residents and visitors. This position offers the opportunity to work outdoors while performing a variety of maintenance and landscaping tasks to keep our parks in top condition.
What you’ll be doing:
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools used in landscaping, mowing, and park maintenance.
- Use lawnmowers and string trimmers to cut and trim fields and other grassed areas; remove weeds from flower beds and landscaped areas.
- Perform routine custodial services, including cleaning park restrooms and emptying trash receptacles.
- Load and unload materials, equipment, and debris from trucks.
- Assist with weather-related maintenance such as snow removal, ice management, and storm cleanup.
- Conduct routine preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles; report repair needs.
- Unlock and lock park facilities and secure equipment.
- Set up and remove event-related items such as tables, chairs, and tents.
- Install signs, cones, and barriers to identify work areas and ensure public safety.
- Perform other similar duties as assigned.

About you:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
- High school diploma or GED/equivalent preferred, but not required.
- Valid state driver’s license required.
- Experience operating trucks and vehicles towing or pulling trailers with equipment such as mowers, string trimmers, edgers, and other landscape tools.
Performance aptitudes:
- Ability and willingness to perform a variety of duties, including mowing, landscaping, trash removal, and cleaning of park facilities/restrooms.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods.
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally with the public.
- Ability to stand, walk, and bend for long periods.
- Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. repeatedly and assisting with event setups, such as moving tables, chairs, and tents.
- Basic knowledge of record-keeping and daily activity logs.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Familiarity with the use of basic hand tools and small power tools.
Other things to know:
- Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday - Thursday, 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Some nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.
