Position Details
The White River Valley Museum and Mary Olson Farm provide a variety of educational programs for school children and the general public. These include school programs such as fieldtrips and outreach kits; youth and family programs including, but not limited to, tours, summer camps, drop-in programs, exhibit programs, and special events; and adult programs such as workshops, classes, lecture series, and films. Under the direction of the Curator of Education, the Education Assistant is a presenter and lead coordinator of the Museum and Farm’s fieldtrip and youth and family programs. They assist in program curriculum design and help to design and staff programs and events at the Museum and Farm.
Note: This is a non-benefited position that performs its duties in support of the Parks, Arts, and Recreation Department. It is not eligible for remote work.
Schedule: Average 25 hours / week not to exceed 1400 per year, Tuesday – Friday, other days including weekends and evenings as assigned. Must be available to work all scheduled evening and weekend program events. Schedule is set at least one month in advance.
Primary Duties
Education and Facilitation Duties
- Leads Museum fieldtrips and assists with fieldtrip guide training.
- Assists with the development and implementation of youth and family programs at the Museum and Farm including, but not limited to summer camps and family days.
- Maintains outreach kit, program, and fieldtrip supply inventories.
- Other duties as assigned.
Administration and Supply Maintenance Duties
- Performs all booking, billing, and scheduling duties associated with the Museum and Farm fieldtrip program.
- Manages department records and databases.
- Provides general administrative support.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- BA in education, museum studies, history or a related field.
- Minimum 1 year of experience working in museums, education or a related field with hands-on, interactive curriculum delivery methods.
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with K - 8 grade age students.
- Computer skills including, but not limited to Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Possession of a WA state driver’s license and the ability to commute between the Museum and Farm (mileage will be compensated).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- General interpersonal and office protocol knowledge, as well as the ability to engage with diverse communities.
- Superior time management and organizational skills. The ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of state and national learning standards.
- Flexibility and reliability.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must be available to work evening and weekend programs as scheduled.
- Ability to operate a ladder, small tools, and carry up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MA in education, museum studies, history or a related field
- Knowledge of object-based learning, visual thinking strategies, and constructivist learning theories
