Minimum Qualifications

Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Arts, Art Education or related field, plus four (4) years of experience developing and implementing cultural and art education programs and activities, at least one (1) of which was in a supervisory or management capacity.

Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.

The City of Austin George Washington Carver Museum, Genealogy and Cultural Center is dedicated to the collection, preservation, research and exhibition of African-American historical and cultural material. The center offers gallery exhibits, programs, classes, children’s camps, theater productions and a genealogy center.

This Position Will

  • Provide leadership, direction, coordination, education and programing for the George Washington Carver Museum, Genealogy and Cultural Center.
  • Manage museum personnel.
  • Prepare, monitor, and manage the budget.
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with stakeholders, non-profits, and other organizations, developing collaborations and partnerships as needed.
  • Represent the museum to a variety of special constituencies (local, regional, and national) and to the public at large.
  • Curate, develop, plan, and implement all museum exhibition programming, including but not limited to gallery talks, lectures, symposia, special activities, performances, film screenings, music concerts as well as activities for families and children.
  • Oversee museum facility management, to include safety, maintenance, and upkeep of a 39,000 square foot building and a 1890 square foot building.

  • Ability to lead and work collaboratively with a diverse team
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees at all levels of the organization, the public, and community stakeholders.
  • Expertise in arts education and/or museum education
  • Expertise in African or African-American history and/or visual arts
  • Expertise in museum management including oversight of a collection
  • Flexibility with regard to work hours

Pay Range

$32.23 - $40.29

Hours

Monday-Friday; 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Variable work schedule. Some evenings, weekends, and holidays will be required.

Work schedule and location is subject to change based on department needs.

Preferred Qualifications:,

  • Experience leading a museum or a multi-arts facility, including oversight of a collection
  • Experience developing partnerships and collaborations with artists, non-profits and educational institutions
  • Experience with program development in the arts, especially as related to African and/or African American cultures
  • Experience creating and managing budgets and making financial projections
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location

Duties, Functions And Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Reviews current and future requirements from needs assessments and develops both short and long range plans.
  • Develops, coordinates, operates, and monitors district or citywide facilities, programs, and events.
  • Develops, approves and implements promotion of programs and events.
  • Develops, approves, and implements program service guidelines for facility operations and use. Ensures proper maintenance of assigned facilities and equipment.
  • Safeguards the city collection of artifacts and other valuables and recommends major acquisitions and expenditures.
  • Communicates project and program information to management and others. Coordinates organization’s programs and activities with other city and public organizations.
  • Prepares and reviews reports as part of the process of monitoring and communicating the organizations performance.
  • Develops, maintains and monitors the budgets and grants.

9 .Monitors contracts and contractors to ensure compliance.

  • Attends meetings representing the organization.
  • Investigates and responds to complaints

Responsibilities- Supervision And/or Leadership Exercised

At manager level, supervision of programs and/or employees is required as follows:

Manage two (2) major programs; Or

One (1) major program and one (1) supervisor; Or

Manage two (2) or more supervisors.

Supervisors are responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal.

Knowledge of program and event planning.

Knowledge if fiscal planning and budget preparation.

Knowledge of maintaining the care of assigned collections, exhibits, records, materials and assets.

Knowledge of principles and methods of showing and promoting products.

Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.

Skill in oral and written communications.

Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.

Skill in planning and organizing.

Skill in using computers and related software applications.

Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.

Ability to apply for and monitor grants.

Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
