Job Description:

The Peer Support Specialist for the University of Baltimore’s Second Chance College Program will lead efforts to support justice-impacted college students (i.e., currently and formerly incarcerated). This role includes interacting with justice-impacted college students to address academic, emotional, and personal needs. This role will provide daily basic-need and emotional support, transportation, and crisis intervention when necessary. This role will be responsible for making referrals to community organizations, and collaborating closely with various university departments (e.g., Career Center and Office of Student Support). This role will be tasked with documenting and maintaining records on all pre and post release reentry assessments.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily support to formerly incarcerated college students. This includes helping students navigate campus and community resources, responding to crisis situations as they arise, and running support groups on campus.
  • In collaboration with the Second Chance Social Worker, help incarcerated students develop home plans and goals, identifying and referring students to community resources, and documenting and following up on student progress.
  • Develop and implement tracking tools to measure students' progress during the one year post-release from prison.
  • This role will work closely with a newly established Research Team to develop reentry tools, identify best-practices, and implement reentry services to support justice-impacted college students. The Peer Support Specialist will contribute to the development of a state-wide reentry model for college campuses.
  • Assisting the rest of the Second Chance team with planning and implementing various activities and events related to the Second Chance Programs academic and reentry services.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2 years of related experience.
  • Your submission should highlight any experience you have with navigating the reintegration process.
  • Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years' experience working with incarcerated or justice-impacted people.

Conditions of Employment:

  • The ability to obtain and maintain clearance at the prison is a necessary condition of employment.
  • Access to reliable transportation to transport students as needed
  • Basic computer skills

  • Evidence of leadership skills
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries
  • Ability to provide ongoing coaching to students approaching release
  • Knowledge of community resources; and ability to develop partnerships
  • Correspond with criminal justice workers, and community organizations
  • Critical thinking skills required to solve challenges presented during crisis situations
  • Ability to think creatively to solve problems and develop alternative solutions to help students.
