BACKGROUND CHECK

PROBATION
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory 6-month probation.
ELIGIBILITY
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
EDUCATION ACCREDITATION
Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
CLASS DEFINITION
An Automotive Mechanic Apprentice is a four-year State-approved program where incumbents learn to perform a wide range of diagnostic, installation, maintenance and repair duties on a variety of automotive, heavy truck, heavy equipment and other mechanical equipment. Work of this class involves no lead or supervisory duties.
Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical supervisor and a specific number of hours of classroom training. Employees in this class may work shift work including weekend hours. Work is performed in an automotive repair shop where unpleasant odors and dirty and greasy shop conditions are regularly encountered. Work requires some strenuous physical exertion including lifting, bending, crawling and periods of prolonged standing.
SELECTION PROCESS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Have one year of automotive experience.
OR
EQUIVALENCY NOTES: Have graduated from an accredited Vocational Technical or Instructional program in the automotive field may substitute for one year of automotive experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required. PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
This is a four-year apprenticeship program and a contract is required for the term of the apprenticeship program.
