Essential Job Functions: Inspects construction of streets, roads, bridges, and drainage projects; reviews and interprets construction plans and specifications; ensures compliance by contractors; ensures that construction has proper alignment and grade, with correct type and quality of materials, and that methods used are in accordance with specifications; enforces safety regulations; directs and takes field samples for testing purposes; operates field survey and testing instruments and equipment; prepares reports; maintains contact with contractors.

Working Conditions: Works inside and outside in all types of weather; works in manholes and trenches/ditches; is exposed to constant and extreme noise, dust/mites and mechanical hazards from being around construction sites.  Works Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., works overtime when necessary. 

 

Knowledge:  Knowledge of engineering design principles and practices as applied to planning, locations and construction of various types of engineering projects; knowledge of possible defects and flaws in various types of construction and of effective corrective measures; knowledge of codes, regulations and ordinances governing constructions. 

 

HMAC Training & Certifications: (Must be obtained within 1-year from date of employment) 

  • Level-1B Roadway Specialist
  • SB-102 Field Specialist

 

ACI Training & Certifications: (Must be obtained within 1-year from date of employment) 

  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician-Grade 1

 

Skills/Abilities:   Ability to recognize conditions likely to result in collapse or failure of facilities and structures that are completed or are under construction; ability to explain, interpret and enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; ability to read, write and do simple mathematical calculations; ability to operate transit, level, calculator, mall, shovel and pick-up truck.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors and the public.

 

Physical Requirements:  Constantly sees and hears; frequently kneeling, sorting, standing, writing by hand, sitting, walking, driving, data entry and using a P.C., holding objects weighing up to 10 lbs., carrying objects weighing up to 20 lbs.; Constantly seeing and using a calculator.  Infrequently climbing, lifting objects weighing up to 20 lbs, pulling or pushing objects weighing up to 25 lbs.  Non-essential to job:  Infrequently typing, filing, cleaning, running, twisting body, squatting, stooping, crawling, dragging objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Must have the ability to remove manhole covers weighing up to 60 lbs.

 

Education/Experience:  Graduation from high school with at least one (1) years’ experience in construction inspection of all types of Public Works or Highway projects.  Construction Inspection Training Certificate to be obtained with in two (2) years. 

Other:   Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license with a good driving record.  Other state valid Driver’s License equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered.  Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid Texas driver’s licenseApplicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and drug/alcohol screen test.
