The Summer Reading Intern will help out with the annual Summer Reading Program (SRP); train and supervise teen volunteers; maintain the summer reading books; and plan and facilitate events and storytimes in the library, as well as at outreach sites around Beaverton. The internship will begin June 10 or 17 (depending on the successful candidate's school schedule) and last through August 17, 2024.
You’ll gain valuable professional library experience while sharing the joy of the Summer Reading Program with kids, teens, and their families.
The intern in this position will have a chance to gain skills in:
- Leadership through training and overseeing volunteers.
- Outreach, programming, and/or storytime.
- Customer service and answering reference questions at a library service desk.
- Library collection knowledge.
- Planning and organization.
- Communication in a professional library setting.
- Knowledge of library workflow, projects, and professional responsibilities.
- Possible other teaching opportunities available depending on interests.
The ideal candidate must be:
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Able to inventory and unpack books.
- Responsible and dependable.
- Able to complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Willing to learn new skills and teach others.
- Interested in working with a team as well as with the public.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and knowledgeable about other Microsoft Office applications.

- Train and oversee teen volunteers and coordinate and schedule substitute volunteers.
- Assist with the Summer Reading Program, including collecting and organizing SRP statistics and marketing the library’s summer offerings.
- Unpack, inventory, and later repack the summer reading books – includes moving small boxes.
- Storytimes at a local park
- Work on a connected learning project to be completed by the end of the summer.
- Perform professional library work under the supervision of a librarian, possibly including:
- Outreach to a community partner location.
- Library reference desk observations.
- Collection development for a small part of a library collection.
- Planning activities for a library program or presenting pop up programs.
- High school junior or senior, or currently enrolled in a college or university, and
- At least 16 years old by the internship start date.
