SUMMARY

Maintains and repairs water distribution and wastewater collection facilities by performing the following duties.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Received written work orders or verbal instructions from Utility Crew Chief, Equipment Operator, or Senior Maintenance Worker.

 

  1. Maintains and repairs elements of the water distribution system, such as water quality, pipes and lines, valves, fire hydrants and meters.

 

  1. Maintains and repairs elements of the sanitary sewer collection system such as mains, manholes and clean outs.

 

  1. Operates a range of light to heavy equipment used in repair and maintenance of water and wastewater facilities under the general supervision of a Utility Crew Chief or Equipment Operator.

 

  1. Performs daily checks of materials, equipment, supplies, vehicles, and tools as instructed.

 

  1. Cleans the wastewater collection system on a monthly and yearly schedule.

 

  1. Installs sewer and water taps, water meters, and repairs or replaces damaged manhole rings and covers.

 

  1. Assists the Utility Crew Chief in maintaining proper job site safety.

 

  1. Assists other divisions of the Public Works Department as needed, including standby and emergency call back.

 

  1. Will perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.

 

  1. Regular and timely attendance is required as well as the ability to get along with others in a professional and cordial manner.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma / (GED).  Some related experience and/or training preferred.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Texas Driver's License. Ability to obtain a Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License within one (1) year of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Work Zone Traffic Control certification within one (1) year of hire.

 

SPECIALIZED KSA’S

Working knowledge of street, water, wastewater and drainage maintenance procedures and equipment operating practices.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration.  The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.  The employee may be exposed to work in areas where there is vehicular traffic nearby.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock.  The employee regularly works in confined spaces and in trenches.   The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
