Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work on a variety of complex mechanical equipment, including light to heavy equipment with gasoline and diesel engines, equipment attachments, pumps, compressors, blowers, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems. The principal function of this position is to diagnose and perform complex mechanical repairs.
Job Description/ Essential Duties:
These job functions are the essential duties of the position and are not all-inclusive of all the duties the incumbent may be assigned.
- Using City-provided tools and equipment, diagnoses and repairs or rebuilds Public Works equipment as necessary, including pumps, electric motors, compressors, gear reducers, hydraulics, valves, etc. These activities may require driving to site and doing on-site maintenance and repairs at a variety of City-owned facilities, including those related to water production and wastewater treatment.
- Performs a variety of preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment and attachments to light and medium-duty trucks (e.g., dump beds and plows) to ensure safe and efficient operation, including inspecting, lubricating and servicing, including but not limited to, changing filters, greasing and oil changes according to prescribed schedules.
- Uses welding equipment to make repairs and/or fabricate parts for equipment.
- Observes meters, gauges, charts, and instruments to assess the condition of equipment, and accurately records all appropriate information.
- Maintains a variety of written and electronic records relating to inspections and maintenance activities on equipment.
- Maintains inventories for consumables, fluids, repair parts, etc.
- Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining them after use.
- Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment, including but not limited to fueling, checking fluid levels, greasing, assessing the overall condition of machines, and cleaning the interior and exterior of trucks, equipment, machinery, tools, etc.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to the Director of Public Works.
- Provides purchasing and inventory recommendations to the Director of Public Works.
- Operates heavy equipment and/or vehicles to remove snow in support of Street Maintenance operators on an as needed basis.
- Operates light and heavy equipment and CDL-required vehicles to move them or facilitate troubleshooting.
- Performs all duties in conformance with applicable laws and safety and security standards.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
