SUMMARY
Performs tasks to assist in the overall operation and maintenance of the City’s Solid Waste Services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Landfill Superintendent that are appropriate to this job description.
- Operate front-end loader, compactor, wheel scraper, backhoe, dozer, dump truck, road grader, baler or related heavy equipment to utilized in pit construction, moving, covering, and compacting of waste deposited into city landfill and access road maintenance.
- Operate equipment to lift and transfer materials to processing areas, to feed conveyors, hoppers, or chutes.
- Observes waste to identify hazardous waste or other materials excluded from deposit in landfill;
- Perform random inspections of loads from the general public to verify materials and prevent illegal dumping;
- Perform weekly inspections of sanitation truck loads;
- Immediately report possible bio-hazards, improperly disposed medical office wastes, asbestos, etc., to Supervisor;
- Direct incoming vehicles to correct dumping area.
- Monitor customer activities to assure compliance with established rules and regulations;
- Deal with public complaints and resolve issues or seek supervisory assistance;
- Apprise public of landfill requirements and fees;
- Operate radio and two-way communications as needed to alert equipment operators of suspicious activity or waste loads.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of solid waste landfill experience
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
- Must have a Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsement
- Must have SD Pesticide and Herbicide applicator license.
- Ability to obtain the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) Certification within two years of hire.
