Job Summary

Highland Community Center is hiring Adaptive Recreation Program Staff !

Responsible for facilitating adaptive recreation programs at the Highland Community Center for adults with intellectual disabilities. Staff must actively engage and supervise participants while leading groups of 10-30 people. This is a fun and rewarding part time or second job. Classes include art, dance, BINGO, Sports, fitness, crafts, and special events.

Our team at Highland Community Center works to provide people living with disabilities opportunities for recreation, socialization, and learning so they can participate more successfully in the life of their community. Programs are designed to help individuals living with disabilities learn new skills, develop confidence, build relationships, maintain a healthy lifestyle, find new interests, and most importantly, have fun.

SCHEDULE :

Programs are held Monday through Friday from 5pm-8 : 30pm and schedule will vary depending on courses staff wants to facilitate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate all aspects of recreation within assigned program for participants
  • Responsible for assigned class activities
  • Coaches
  • Performs data entry for program management
  • Leads volunteers
  • Teaches (small classes)
  • Creates displays
  • Adapt course material to participant ability level
  • Accountable for participants during programs
  • Provide assistance feeding participants
  • Does word processing
  • Program preparation and set-up; explains program requirements.
  • Operates specialized equipment.
  • Applies Basic first aid when necessary
  • Assists with set up, maintenance, and / or operation of data management processes.
  • Works in more than one assignment in the Recreation Division.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED :

  • Work is performed with moderate supervision.
  • Job responsibilities are clearly defined, however, there may be opportunities for decision making within program activity.
  • Program may be facilitated with another staff member.
  • Qualifications

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

  • Applicant has a thorough knowledge of programs and services to which they are assigned.
  • Interpersonal contacts will extend beyond the work group to patrons and the public.
  • Public contact is significant and ongoing, working relationships are established with patrons.
  • Staff must be able to collaborate and communicate with other staff members.
  • Will work with multiple participants within various programs.
  • EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS :

  • Prior work experience or education in recreation or a related field.
  • Prior experience with children or adults living with intellectual disabilities.
  • First Aid, CPR, or other specialized training or experience will be required.

  • Work will be emotionally demanding or stressful (will be working with at risk youth, physically disabled persons, or potentially dangerous situations, etc).
  • Job tasks involve work with youth or the elderly or are of such a nature that the employee may be called on to make physical interventions, push wheelchairs and load vans, etc.
  • Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Work will be physically demanding (participation in athletics, lifting heavy loads, potentially dangerous situations, etc).
  • This is a variable, non-exempt, non-union position.

    Definition of a Variable Employee :

  • Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
  • Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
  • NOTE : Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month).
