The City of Renton is recruiting for a Recreation Specialist - Adaptive Programs to join our Parks & Recreation department. The Adaptive Recreation Program consists of Special Olympics, fitness, social and enrichment classes. This position hires, trains, and mentors' supplemental staff, recruits' volunteers, and works closely with community organizations to deliver services. The position actively participates in day-to-day program operations.

The incumbent will need excellent customer service skills, communication, and organizational skills and enjoy working with volunteers, special needs participants and is ready to help grow our program.

This position is a .75 FTE and works 30 hours per week, which will include weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Plan, schedule, organize and implement year-round recreational and athletic programs, cultural arts activities, and general programming at assigned locations for the Adaptive Program.
  • Instruct, conduct and participate in the Adaptive Program; prepare schedule of events and secure necessary supplies for daily and special activities; participate in programs at more than one facility as required.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, organizing and conducting various activities and services for the Adaptive Program participants, determine fees for recreational classes.
  • Communicate and work with community groups, governmental and private agencies to obtain services, programs and support; solicit community participation.
  • Cooperate with public and private groups; communicate effectively with a wide variety of people in conducting activities for Adaptive Program participants; maintain discipline in assigned area according to established guidelines.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records including attendance, registration, vandalism, incidents and equipment use of records.
  • Maintain safety standards and specialized safety requirements.
  • Resolve disciplinary problems according to established guidelines; refer more difficult situations to appropriate authorities
  • Enforce program and facility discipline policies and safety guidelines.
  • Negotiate contracts with service providers as required and assist with program budget development and control expenditures.
  • Assist in recruiting, training and directing volunteers and temporary/seasonal employees at assigned locations and/or events.
  • Assist in budget preparation and control.
  • Assist in the preparation of publicity releases, reports, brochures and general promotions of the programs.
  • Open and close facilities; schedule and prepare facilities for use and set up recreation areas for public use, performing routine custodial work as needed.
  • Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3 years of recreation program experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Obtain a valid CPR and first aid certificate within the first six months in this classification.
  • Successful passing of a required background check 
  • Successful passing of a driving record check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in an office environment and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Noise level out in the field is moderately loud.
  • Noise level in the office is moderately quiet.
  • Work evening and/or weekend hours is required
  • Night meetings may be required.

Recruitment Process:
The screening process will include a review of minimum qualifications and applicants selected for an interview will be invited via email to self-schedule a time through the Government Jobs account. At minimum, this position will be subject to a standard criminal background check and professional reference check. This position requires driving and is also subject to a driving record check from the WA State Dept of Licensing (or other state equivalent). Driving records will be evaluated based on a points system depending on the infraction and severity.
