Description
Under general supervision, to assist in planning and conducting recreation programs and activities; and to maintain recreational facilities.
Receives general supervision from a Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Coordinator, Program Coordinator, and / or Recreation Specialist. At times may lead and provide limited supervision of work groups for some assignments.
This is the entry level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the position at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
Examples Of Duties
- Assist in the planning, promoting, conducting, supervising, and evaluating of recreational programs and activities.
- Interact and stimulate interest while conducting and supervising program activities including but not limited to sports, games and contests, special events, art and crafts, social activities, park patrol, and transportation services.
- Assist with coordinating and supervision of community special events.
- Inspect assigned recreation facilities and / or equipment; report necessary repairs.
- Provide technical and administrative support to Parks and Recreation management staff.
- Review and evaluate work products, methods, programs, and procedures.
- Complete records and reports as required.
- Provide and coordinate staff and / or volunteer training.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public.
- Perform Park Patrol duties including approaching park patrons to offer assistance or provide reminders of municipal codes.
- Address illegal park activity by contacting law enforcement.
- Ensure the parks is free from litter and debris.
- Promote and ensure safety procedures around participants, staff, and spectators.
- Order supplies and equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience :
Experience in recreation leadership or recreation programs is desirable. A typical way to obtain this is direct experience in leadership, volunteerism or participation in recreational activities. Must be at least 16 years of age and enrolled in High School. Enrollment in college with a major in Recreation or a related field is highly desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office and / or recreational facility setting and use standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to participate in recreational activities; and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds and the ability to travel to different sites and locations and be available for irregular work schedule.
Environmental Elements
Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and / or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and / or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and / or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
