SUMMARY
Maintains Bentonville's Wastewater collection systems. Supervises a crew of 1-3 Wastewater Collection field employees who perform work on the City's wastewater collection system, including installation, maintenance, repair, expansion, and relocation of wastewater collection lines. Is fully qualified to perform the most complex functions of the wastewater collection field team. Typically holds a Wastewater Grade II license and has 5 years or more experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Report relationships, work assignments, and work schedules may be subject to change in order to meet City needs or operational requirements. Attendance at work and the ability to get along with the public, supervisors, and co-workers are essential elements of this position. Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary.
Directly supervises crewmembers in the construction and maintenance of sanitary sewer lines and manholes. Routinely excavates or directly supervises excavation of trenches in the 3' - 15' depth range for the purpose of maintaining the wastewater collection system. There will be times when trench excavation depths surpass 15'.
Instructs crew concerning installations and repairs. Assigns tasks to crewmembers.
Is directly responsible for all safety adherence to City and Department policies related to all activities associated with maintaining the wastewater collection system.
Checks and inspects worksites to ensure work is completed properly.
Performs daily truck inventory. Ensures all tools and equipment are properly cleaned and stowed.
Serves as the “Confined Space” safety supervisor during confined space operations.
Completes reports. Checks and completes work orders, requisitions, daily logs, used and returned materials, and vehicle and equipment reports.
Responsible to ensure crewmembers complete timesheets.
Notifies customers when wastewater collection service is interrupted.
As required, digs ditches using picks, shovels, and other hand tools. Also uses tools like ditch pumps, air compressors, jackhammers, and basic survey equipment.
Assists crew in laying and tapping into new and existing wastewater lines.
Plans installation or repair to avoid obstructions and to avoid interfering with activities of other workers.
As required, performs all pipefitting and installation duties of Wastewater Collection Specialists.
As required, drives truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, gravel, crushed rock, bituminous paving materials.
At times assists in closed-circuit television inspections of existing wastewater collection lines.
Assists in performing smoke and dye testing of existing wastewater collection lines.
Assists in performing wastewater collection system physical surveys.
Assists in filing, mapping, and logging operations.
This position will be required to work rotational standby. This will require carrying and responding to the standby phone. This rotation standby is from Monday to Monday with the requirement of responding to calls outside of the normal work schedule, which includes holidays.
This position is also required to provide the department with a dependable phone number in the event of an emergency or job task that requires additional personnel.
This position will be responsible for removal of accumulated snow in the event of a winter storm at assigned locations throughout the City of Bentonville.
This position is considered a first responder in the event of a citywide emergency or disaster situation. During such an event, this position will coordinate with the Supervisor and perform tasks that are assigned based on the need of the situation.
Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises 1-5 wastewater collection specialists. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
One year certificate from college or technical school and six (6) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Competent with the use of Microsoft software programming.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, SPECIAL SKILLS
- Class “A” Commercial Driver's License
- Class II Wastewater License
- Class I or II Water distribution license (preferred but not required)
- Competent in trench safety
- Competent in confined space training
- Competent in traffic control
- Competent in heavy equipment safety and control

Methane gas, natural gas, low oxygen levels, oxygen rich levels, hydrogen sulfide gas, asbestos dust, clay dust, concrete (skin contact), Hepatitis A, B and C, drowning, equipment injuries, traffic accidents, snake bites, insect bites, poison plants, and excavation cave-ins.
